Technical Purple gun on sale again

Just picked up another purple gun for my collection for $8.98!

Thanks for the heads up as I don't get mailed flyers anymore, and I use them for primer.

 

if you drill the tip, you can use them for feather fill, and house paint

 

QUESTION: Can that purple gun be used to spray base coat/clearcoat on a car hood?

 

Thanks, I need to get a few more. Had issues with the trigger sticking a couple weeks ago spraying primer. So I tossed it. Didn't feel like cleaning it anyway.

 

yes,... it's not the gun, it's who gets it in their hand......a painter using a gun to paint a quality job would most likely not chance using a 9 dollar paint gun.... bad shit happens with them...like shooting a streamer on the hood... waisting the paint, and having to re prep.. or even drips.... painting once in a while stuff you are gonna sand anyway... great...... painting hoods and tops on a car... shit happens...

 

Holy shit, good tip, I'm going to grab a couple this weekend, if my local store has any left. I bought one a year ago to try and I actually like it, have used it several times and no complaints. Would be nice to have a couple spares though, even my good gun eventually got too gummed up and stopped working, and these are so cheap.

 

I base-cleared the fenders and tailgate on my dad's truck with one and also did the wheels on my current Nash project base/clear with the same gun and I've been pretty impressed with it. I've sprayed paint with some pretty expensive guns at the body shop I used to work at and I found these purple guns to work just fine and be easy to use.

They don't come with the little pressure regulator for the bottom, so you'll need one of those. Otherwise, pretty well good to go.

 

I bought 4 of them last time they were on sale. First time I’ve used one of these guns. I used one this past week to paint my car trailer. I couldn’t get it to adjust the spray pattern at all. Sprayed about half a cup of paint before I said screw this and got a second gun. Worked great right out of the box, hardly any adjustment necessary to get a good spray going. I guess for $9, I can afford to toss one.

 

^^^^ The quality control on these guns is questionable. A lot of times there is a glob of grease inside, and I always disassemble and clean them first followed by spraying a test pattern on a piece of cardboard using water. Of the ones I have purchased, only one got tossed because it was defective.

 

I bought 2 last time. Used one to shoot primer and it worked well. Happy with the purchase.
As to will it work for other stuff, it depends on the tip supplied and what is recommended, but that is normal. I.E., don't expect it to handle huge 'flake.
For hobby use, it is cheap enough to give it a try, just test it out first. I'll also add that I used a small compressor that I thought wouldn't be able to keep up but it was fine for my small project. The same compressor couldn't keep up with an air grinder.

 

This is a purple gun paint job. White primer, pearl white, HOK Lime Gold candy, 3 coats catalyzed urethane clear.

@TwistedMetal that is funny until you look at how many threads are here asking if they can use the cheapest paint and get a good paint job!

I've seen some that work great. SOME. You get what you pay for. It's a 9 dollar coin flip. I shoot with an Iwata 400. It was expensive and has paid for itself many times over. Am I pissing on it? No, but the shit I do I can't afford to flip coins. What I will tell you is to CLEAN THE LIVING FUCK OUT OF IT when you get it home. Torch tip cleaners are your friend when cleaning a spray gun, especially for the air cap. My bitch is most are either all or nothing when it comes to pattern adjustment. That should come apart and be cleaned as well but mainly it's a quality control issue. You know, a coin flip. Just don't get your hopes too high. It'll do the job most hobbyists need with a little time sorting it out 1st.

 

Lots of good info here about this cheapie gun, but I definitely think it's worth 9 bucks! Also, I just use it for primer. I just sprayed the inside of my hood with 2 coats of epoxy with my older one, and it sprayed fine. Hope the new one works as well!

Oh the purple guns work good for me, however I’m not a pro.

No disrespect intended for our 4legged friends corncobcoupe. Please delete that post. I do plan on running to HF tomorrow for the guns. That issue I had with the trigger sticking a couple weeks ago was a concern. Lucky I was only spraying primer. Also what they say they have on their site usually doesn't match what they have at the store. We will see.

I bought four yesterday. I was taught decades ago how to properly clean a gun, and will do so before I use any of these.

If they don’t work, I’ll dig one of my old Binks* out of the cabinet.

*can’t say that’s not traditional

 

I shot the primer with one on a truck bed awhile back, worked waaay better than I expected. I chickened out when it came time for color though.....good ole No.7.

For $10, everybody otta have a couple around IMO.

I've got a Sata Jet, a Sharpe Platinum, and a Sharpe Cobalt that are all 20+ years old for serious work....but these things are great for primer and small jobs....just went and bought two more thanks to this thread because I've got an old Sportster to do for a friend of mine real quick like....

 

Bought one for primering. Worked well 5 times then stopped working. Leaking air from somewhere. Oh well. Yes get what you pay for.

 

I use a Sharpe cobalt for base and clear, had it around 18 yrs now. Like anything clean it properly and take care of it and it will last a long time.

Got a banks #7 hanging on the wall, it's every bit of 40 yrs old. Had it rebuilt back in like 1988, last time I used it....

I bought a couple of these last time they were on sale but haven’t tried one yet. I’m still using my good gun I bought 30 years ago so far. Oh, and I have a Binks #7 and a couple Binks pressure pots too speaking of more traditional guns.
