Hi. Just bought a 51 ford coupe with a flathead. The sensors for the temp gauges are located in the water necks just above the thermostats not in the heads (it has 2 temp gauges). Is this giving me any where near the right readings?

    Hope this makes sense. Chuck

    Only if the thermostat opens!
They should be in the port provided for them in the head. 1 provides the variable temp reading and one acts as a p*** through post and only sends a signal to the gauge when temp gets to high and sends the gauge reading to "Too Damn Hot".
Piss poor system but it somewhat works.

What kind of gauges and sensors? Aftermarket or stock? If stock, are they the one terminal or two terminal type? I would expect they are mechanical (capillary tubes, not wires) aftermarket gauges, but it's nice to be sure.

While I agree about mounting them in the stock location, I will disagree about the stock system being "piss poor". I have the stock gauge in my '51 connected to the one terminal sensor and an after market mechanical gauge hooked up to the stock port in the other head. The gauges track each other almost exactly, the only difference is that the Ford King-Seeley system seems to respond to changes in temperature a little quicker than the aftermarket gauge. Also, I think you should "bone up" on how the two sender Ford system actually operates.

Similar to @tubman I have two gauges and two senders. My left head reads a bit warmer than the right but you have to leave a little room for variances in gauge accuracy.

Yep running a temp sensor in each head down to two individual gauges. Both run pretty much exactly the same

I think I'm already "Boned Up" on how the original 2 sensor system works.
Let me know what I said in my post that was misleading or false tubman. I have provided a drawing for you to "Bone Up" on how the 2 sensor system works.

And...Yes there is room for improvement by running 2 gauges with single post senders to monitor both sides.

I've put a bung and sender in the top radiator tank for all of my flattys. Don't see why I need to know the individual head temperatures. Of course if your running a restoration, you're kind of stuck with the original setup.

Good evening. If an electric fan is being used with the flathead (8BA), can one of the sensors in the head be the electric fan temperature sensor wired to the two prong sensor in the other head or do they both need to be OG sensors?

If anyone knows of a thread mentioning this please kindly share. I cannot seem to get a straight answer and because of this I want to just try it out and see if it works so that I may share if someone else has always pondered this question/setup.

Also, I am currently using a 180 degree probe in the left upper corner of my radiator (I don’t feel this is reliable) and it seems to not activate the fan at the stated temperature, reason for my thinking. It seems to be kicking on at about 220ish degrees. Still using original temperature gauge. Any ***istance to this question is appreciated.

All in all I’d like to use the original setup/look with the exception of replacing the single prong OG sensor with the fan on/off temperature sensor if possible and have it still operate for the head/system as intended and as the OG would have. Otherwise, I’ll look at other possible alternatives. Thank you kindly in advance.

**Pictures are of electric fan probe and current OG head temperature sensors.

If you locate the fan temp switch under the return hose you will have better results
You should start a new thread to get answers to your questions
