I am no painter. All I have used in the last 10 years are the purple guns, the one's I had from 40 years ago have disappeared. That said, I think the purple gun is better than the guy that's operating it:( FullSizeRender(33).jpg

I don't know who makes these guns but there's bunch of em out there in different names and colors. I had an old green one that shit the bed a long time ago. Still have an old (Mac I think) thats also the same, bought on sale for like 12.99 long ago. It still works, I think...o_O

  4. Years ago when the purple gun became common, the one to buy was number 62381 also known as the 48430 if I remember correctly. That unit comes with a regulator and is a better gun than the cheaper unit. They used to sell different needles for the regulator gun. I have a 1.8mm that I used to spray thick house paint with.

As proven by this thread, that's not the American way. :)
You buy the bargain basement one and expect it to make you a pro on your first try, right out of the box! :D

I wish I’d thought of the lamp idea before I put mine in the metal pile

    I bought 4 more.

I use them until they show wear and then toss them.

True story, I tried, borrowed, experimented and more trying the gravity guns and trying to master these modern 4 to 1 clears. I always ran the last coat somewhere, or it was cantaloupe peel cuz it was so bad. I did a 4 to 1 single stage with the Iwata LPH 400. the finish quality and no runs were amazing to me with a simple gun change. I came outta the booth and did a Shining Jack Nicholson to the guys, "HONEY, I'm home!" The gun fixed me. That was like 20yrs ago. Full disclosure, my last coat was always a 4th. You're only supposed to do 3 but I surface my finishes like many surface primers with sticks and foam pads, and of course finish paper. I'm still home...

I've used binks, iwata, sata, sharpes, etc.

I always felt it was just a learning curve of using a certain gun. Just like paint makers.

Late 90's used pg, dupont and basf. The dupont you could hammer the base but had to watch the clear, it would run easier. The basf was the opposite, you could hammer the clear but the base would run easier.

Again a learning curve to figure out what you can and can't do with each product, gun or paint....

Bought 2 online yesterday after seeing this thread thank you @Sporty45.
Funny how any thread involving welding or painting brings out the best of the best.

I find it funny people trust it for primer. That's the the base to your finish paint. If the primer fails then you wasted your time and money.
If the primer sprays fine then why won't the paint?

As mentioned by other people here, it does do fine for paint. I only use it for a primer gun because the base and clear spray completely different than primers. I have no idea how it sprays a metallic base, but for the prices charged for good paint these days, I'm hesitant to try it. I don't think the gun really has anything to do with the primer failing. That is due more to poor preparation, than with the application.

Someone mentioned drilling the tip. If I drill the tip large enough, will the gun shoot exterior latex paint? I had a whole house generator installed and I have to spray all the electrical and gas line conduit to match the house so it doesn't stand out as much. It'll take a long time to do by brush. If i can somehow make that cheapo gun work and then toss it when finished that would be great. If it's possible how big would I need to drill the tip to make it work? I know it's a half-assed way to get it done but it beats buying an electric sprayer for 10 times that cost. I'm not looking for fine level work, I just need to make the conduit the same tan as the house.

A guy in florida who is on FB buys them by the case when they are on sale and calls them disposable. He uses one to paint a whole bunch of body panels at one time and then tosses it and never cleans them. As others said, it is the skill of the hand holding it that counts. I've got several stashed away usually buying one or two when they are on sale but haven't needed to paint anything for a while.

  19. I've done several paint jobs with the purple gun. From Rustoleum on patio furniture to panel repairs base/clear, and even entire vehicle primer/base/clear.

Are my results show car quality? No, painting in driveway has limits; but I get the job done and find the purple gun to do a good job. Assuming you set it up right and pay attention while painting.

Thanks for the heads up I ordered four . For the $6.99 shipping I'm not stopping there the gas and time is worth more and I'm in no hurry.

I bought one after reading al the hype on the hamb. I tossed it. Couldn't get it to not leak, long enough to do anything. Junk in my opinion. I'll stick with my Iwata and Sata.

I really like the last one I got, so I grabbed two more this weekend, again, thanks for the heads up.

I still have what was a very nice Sharpe gun I bought for myself years ago and it always worked fantastically but I did loan it out once and now it seems hopelessly fucked. Never could get it to work right again, it's got primer dried out inside I think.

I picked up another one yesterday. Already have a couple but tend to not clean them well, mostly 'cause I get busy and forget and the price of cleaning solvent is almost the price of a gun! I've used these things for years for primer, equipment paint and once in a while for single stage paints. They work fine if a 1.4 tip fits your needs or after drilling the tip out for primer.

Local store had no shelf tags for the sale, I showed them the coupon in this thread on my phone and they took it.

I save my good DeVilbis for good paint and clear. I think it has painted maybe 4 cars since purchased about 20 years ago, when really good HVLP guns became available.

Good to know. I left some 2K primer in my "old" one, which of course hardened and plugged it. Don't know what I was thinking when I hung it back on the hook over the bench, but stuff happens. I too use it for primer/surfacers, I shoot color with a "blue" gun from HF that was, if I'm remembering, about $100. It does a nice job.

I shot my champ car frame with the HF little-sister jamb gun over the weekend.
Seemed to work OK, but I had to clean build-up at the tip between cup refills.
(I learned from a striper that an aerosol can of carb cleaner works well for that job.)

It turned out well. I will do the final coat with the same gun.

I also bought the Iwata LPH400 to shoot my PU last year, what a gun! Of course, for the price I could have bought a few cases of HF guns. I'm no pro, but that Iwata clear gun definitely elevated my game.

I liked the iwata and sata but couldn't justify the price for something I use every couple years.

I liked them at the body shop but we were using them almost daily so cost was justifiable.

What’s the deal with the green gun anyway? You take 10 or 15 years off from the hobby and all of a sudden they have new colors out!
