I'm not computer savvy enough to play a long game with a scammer online, emails, etc........ But this one time a scammer was trying to turn up the pressure and had a story that the sale had to be "right now and the money sent by Western Union, right now". I told him I was on my way to WU so go pick up the cash. I never went but I did drink a cold one. He contacted me to ask "What happened?" I told him I had a family emergency and I had just taken care of it and I was really heading out the door this time to go to WU...... so go get it. ......but I had another cold one instead. Funny thing, he never did contact me again after that.
"and you will have an inspection period of 7 days to test drive the car and check it with a mechanic." do people actually fall for that nonsense? no real seller would ever do that even if shipping was only 10 bucks
Advise the "seller" that the risk is the same if he sends you the car up front, without payment, for you to inspect and drive, and only THEN will you send him the money directly. Roger
$16,800 seems to be the common scam price. Reverse the transaction requirements. Tell them to send the car and current up to date legal title COD to you and if it's as good as you say it is you'll pay them $18,000 for it. Bwhahaha... You won't hear from the (politically correct) they- them- him again. Bwhaaa x 2
I've sold a couple of hot rods through the Classic Auto Mall, Morgantown, Pa, a consignment business, and that is pretty much how deals are handled. Are you buying from a consigner? ...and check out if they are reputable.
I should follow up on this post. Yes, it was def a scam. After exchanging a number of emails, wherein I kept asking where the car was, he said “I don't have time for this” It was beyond me what he might have been referring to; so I asked him what it was he didn't have time for (baitin' the hook)…I mean if a person really wants to sell a car, it would be in his best interest to take the time. Then he throws in about how his (offshore) work is bringing him down and his dad just passed, so he had to deal with that too. One in a series of emails… > Yes, I'm still serious about buying. What is it that you don't have time for? Sorry to hear of your father's passing. Can you send the obit? You still haven't told me where the car is....... Where did the 2 potential buyers go to look at it? If you'll tell me where, I can start to make travel plans. Also, how will you ship the car to 4 other guys for them to have for 7 days and inspect if you're in a hurry to sell? Am I the 5th person in line? This will take a lot of time.... < No emails after that . It was all a big joke, and I should have known without even asking. A few pix of the car…I sure do like this model in white… I'm sure he grabbed the pix off the net. His name is (was) John Jonk. Original, eh? Seems I saw this car in another ad.
It's amazing how many of-shore oil workers have nice cars they have to sell and have recently suffered a family loss. It's very sad.
