Has anyone used this box on their car? If so, what SBC exhaust manifolds are you using to clear the box? Car currently has the original 36 box with a homemade bracket which relocated the box to clear the exhaust flange on the Corvette style manifolds. I am swapping in a 525 box with Pete and Jakes bracket. Trying to figure out if my existing manifolds are going to work, or am I shopping for headers? Thanks!

I had to cut a section out of my motor mounts to allow for the exhaust pipe on my ram horn manifolds. It wasn’t ideal, but it has lasted 10 years so far….

I think a rear dump would solve your issues. Either that or flip a rear dump around and have it exit the front.

Speedway sells some nice looking rear exit exhaust manifolds but you probably won't know if your existing ones will work or not till you mount the box. I say that because your motor may not be sitting at the same height someones elses motor sits at...........so best to install the box temporarily so it can be moved or repositioned and see what ya got.

One option you might try is exhaust manifolds off of a "G" body V-8, not performance manifolds by any means but they go up and back, dump to the rear.

  6. Probably not what you want to do, but on my 36 with a SBC and V_g_ steering box I ran fender well headers with the exhaust under the running boards, eliminated clearance issues. Mitch

  7. I seen a bunch with 265 manifolds on them, not sure what they were running for steering boxes though.

I use ramhorns and curve the exhaust pipe around the steering box

  9. I put a SBC with the same steering box in my '38 Ford pickup (basically the same frame as your '36). I used Chassis Engineering mounts and used a '67-'69 Chevy/GMC pickup passenger side exhaust manifold on the driver's side. It's made like the old "ram's horn" center dump manifolds except the center dump is angled toward the rear of the vehicle instead of straight down. When you use the passenger side manifold on he driver's side, the dump is angled toward the front and clears the steering box. Not by a lot, but it clears it. There is a short oil filter designed for a mid-'70s V8 Chevy Monza that made it possible to change the oil filter without unbolting the exhaust.

I would like to see pics of that. I have pondered doing that on my 36 pickup in the future.

I can't say for sure if it will work for you, late 60's Impalas, Caprices, and 350 powered pickups used a rams horn manifold that had an angled outlet heading back instead of the traditional straight down flange. I have used them successfully in 42-48 chassis and the exhaust goes easily by the steering box with out any clearance problems. They also made an angled outlet ram horn for the right side. It doesn't help clearance at all, but gives the swap a balanced look.

  15. I just carefully trimmed and formed/welded my stock ones for header clearance. They were louvered so they needed reinforcement. Easy peasy.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I will probably go with the 67-72 RH manifold.

  18. Eric I will look thru my build file to see if I have it. I THINK they were S&S fenderwells for early Fords, but I also THINK they are no longer in business. I see a company , Southwest Speed build a set that look close for a SBC in a 35-48 Ford chassis. Don't know the quality or where they were built. Mitch

Ram horn manifold on a 350 in my 35 Ford pickup. The header pipe curves to the front of the truck, then curls around the steering box, pipe2.jpg pipe.jpg

They have the ones you posted back in stock now. I don’t know if it’s worth it to me to go headers, or just keep the 2 1/4 ram horns I have now. It’s a 480 lift with 282 108 lobe sep. and afr 185 heads. Cam powerband is 2000-5500 and just a cruiser. Well the past 4 years it’s just a sitter, but also have most my exhaust made it the 2 inch if I go out the back like before. If using fender well headers and go under the running boards does the rubber melt? Don’t want that for sure.

  26. Here is what I used on my 40 with SBC and 525 box

C10 pickup right side rams horn on left side. I had intended to use the 265 manifold but there was a significant mismatch with the port sizes, and the outlet pipe hit the CE motor/frame mount.

Home made pipe to wrap around box. And go between oil filter and box.
Used a piece of Dorman defroster/pre-heater aluminum flex pipe to mock up and pattern shape.

Used a section of DEI sleeve to insulate the pipe
