    Hello,

See the just posted thread on the "Ultimate Willys" thread. It is the information I had on the green sedan. It is not a primer paint, but looks stock, a little faded if I recall. It is the So Cal record setting sedan by the team of Weddle-Nichol-Peters that set a lot of records for the class.

    Hello,

As wonderful as a “find” may be, you have to do some research to go back as far as you can to see where it started and where, over the years it moved or competed in various classes. I only have recorded film from 1959 and that team was a well known team with the listed racers having gone on to other teams and their own builds. Some became household names and others did their own thing… so, again, you will have to call or email the specific places most known to drag racers.

In looking through various old Drag News weekly papers during the following years, most sell their cars to friends or in the classified sections. I cannot remember seeing this record setting Willys sedan being for sale.

Ed Weddle was the chassis maker of the Mondello-Matsubara Fiat Altered Coupe around 1964. That gives you a place to start your own search.

Also, he was part of the Mickey Brown Oldsmobile powered FED team in 1959.

NHRA Motorsports Museum in Pomona would have various people that go way back in drag racing history and would have access to records and information about those that were tops in their specific class or competition groups. Remember, the Gas Coupe and Sedan class faded out around 1966 as did the street roadster class and others that the sanctioning bodies deemed no longer relevant. They got lumped into a single run eliminator group and then faded out all together as the FED racers, altered wheel base “stock” cars, and funny car racers began to appear as money makers at drag strips.

We are still looking for someone or two that bought our 671 supercharged SBC motor for a car in the Midwest. We boxed it up with the new owner and he shipped it back. then one other complete Willys car from 1971 Westcoast shipping to the Midwest was Atts Ono’s immaculate complete Willys Coupe. his brother told me that it was rolled up into a moving van headed of all places… somewhere in the Midwest.

So, grandparents, cousins and families involved in early drag racing at one time or another, where are those two items shipped: “to the Midwest” I could see our 671 complete SBC motor getting lost in the shuffle and other forms of race cars. But an immaculately built 40 Willys Coupe missing in action from 1971? It should have been easier than this search… YRMV

all I was asking if the car you were talking about that the guys owned since 1959 was the green sedan, thanks for responding I do do all my own research when restoring an old hot rod, I will keep my eyes and ears pealed for your family’s old coupe, that would be really great if you did find it, I’ve only been able to find 2 Leeds on the sedan because many of the people involved have passed on, thanks again

Probably a long shot… but RJ Race Cars / Quartermax is based in Galesburg. Rick Jones (now retired) and his son Rickie have been building and racing premier drag cars for several decades - think Elite Motorsports / Erica Enders and all their other associated teams. Perhaps a call or email to them might get you a lead?
