Well OP said “worn out 70’s 305 with an RV cam.
I’d say the rocker arm served its purpose.
    Lifters as well.

  2. I had a pushrod push through a rocker on my 360 in the Fargo, I just swapped a good one in and didn’t give it much thought. These things happen.

Yep, sometimes they just break. Unless it is an ongoing issue, I have just replaced and moved on.

The country music industry calls it country, and it's horrible. That's my point.

The new crop of so called Country&Western artist's, don't have a clue as to who this man was, and the great Western Swing music he created.

As a rocker, can we agree that it's music industry that is the issue?
Industry is great for turning out large scale product, like rocker arms.
    Artistic stuff, not so much.

  12. My t-bucket ate a couple when I first got it together, I blamed it on the angle milled heads. I put some long slot roller tip rockers on and never had a problem with it again.

I ain’t saying it’s impossible, but I had no luck doing it that way.

    Anywho…

Last week when I started this headache of a gasket change the lifter under that rocker looked fine as far as I could tell.

Now it looks like this. I don’t know where the rest of it is.

I should have just made sure to check the coolant regularly and ignored that leak, lol.

  15. @wheeltramp brian ,@continentaljohn , had the same thing happen on a daily driver pickup many, many moons go. Loud clacking, drove the 5 minutes home, and pulled the cover. Saw the issue, grabbed some good used spares, and back together. Kept it for the longest time for Show and Tell. Started carrying a spare pushrod and rocker arm setup in glove box after that.
No issues with the others, either.

Check for all of the aforementioned conditions, but...

Remember that every single manufacturing process has a failure rate of some percentage.

    There are no exemptions.

A 0.001% failure rate on 1,000,000 produced items is 10 failures.

The OP stated he was concerned the lifter on #7 (not just the rocker) might be bad. I simply told him how to remove it without having to pull the intake. I've done it many times...it's not difficult to do or to understand.

Country music used to be the white man’s blues music. These days everyone wants the latest crossover pop/rock/country hit. Hence the shit state of country music. I blame Chet Atkins.

Holysmokes. What did I start? Anyways, growing up I was good friends with a guy named Eric Allen. Nowadays he goes by Whitey Morgan. I guess he's ok. And Colter Wall...voice like gravel.

Not wanting to change the current topic;), but I think maybe some more surgery on the engine is in order.
Something that should be done on an engine stand.
Now it’s not like years past, finding a SBC just isn’t as easy at it used to be. Even harder, to find one in its standard bore to work with.
With the broken lifter, I’d want to get eyes on the cam lobe(s), lifter bore, etc.
pulling the heads might reveal the bore wear and what you have to work with.
Best of luck, now back to your favorite C and W radio station!

Many times when a lifter fails the crown starts to mushroom. If you can get a worn lifter out of its bore through a small hole with a magnet , you're either incredibly lucky or have an extremely strong magnet . I recall more often than not , having a heck of a time pulling varnished, damaged lifers wist the valley open .
