Technical Alexander intake drivability & tuning

    Hi Everyone,

    Currently collecting parts and building a C59A and I'm debating using my Alexander intake (pic included). The problem I foresee with this is the drivability and tuning. Looks like the air/fuel flow will be horrible with two sharp right turns just in the top half of the intake runners. Does anyone have any experience with a similar shaped intake and how it performs and tunes? im not married to the idea of using it, just thought it would look cool and be different. other options are a PM7 or a Slingshot which I already have. Just thought this would make the engine a little unique.

    In the pic, there are two adaptors on top which convert the intake from a Winfield to a 94/97 application. Have a look at the runner design and let me know your thoughts/experience.

    You have way more issues below the bottom half, there is a flatmotor there! I'd run it after some intake port work.

    That is a cool-looking setup, bur @carbking (who should know) says that adapters are never an improvement. and in combination with an unknown runner design, it probably would have some problems. You know that you do have to try it, though.

    Get in contact with @Kevin Pharis; maybe he can make you a couple of Winfields.:)

    ya the casting on the Alexander on the inside is horrible. Tons of casting flash. I’ll have to clean it up

    I really do want to try it :)

    never considered running Winfields as I have no idea where to find a pair but that’s an option

    What size are the 4 bolt Winfield carb flanges? And how bout the 2 bolt flanges? Maybe run 4 singles…?

    The 4 bolt flanges aren’t even drilled yet (no holes at all). Thinking this must have been a prototype or something. 4 singles is very cool but I’m not sure I have the tuning skills to get that going! I come from 60s mopar background and this is my first flathead. I’m use to one big carb haha!

    Repro manifold, so don’t be concerned about modifying it and ruining a rare piece.

    Even better! Now you get to decide what size carbs. Each size Winfield has a unique bolt pattern. Sizes range from 1.25” - 2” diameter base opening in 1/8” increments. Here is an estimate of flow rates @ 3”

    this is super useful to know. im thinking two of the B would be sufficient based on the flow

    OOPS! My rememberer must have been distracted by all the election rhetoric. I corrected my post above as the carb was measured @ 3”. Probably should add that to my spread sheet…!

    As a point of reference, Winfield offered a pair of A’s as a performance replacement for the 97. B’s are about 50% bigger.
