I just bought a 57 Chevy 210 2 dr that has factory power steering. I hate the way it feels and plan to take it off and go non power. It has been many years since I played with tri fives and need to know what parts I need to order up. For example, is the pitman arm the same. Any input is welcome. Thx Dan
All you need is this. https://www.ebay.com/itm/2918366307...NhXNYkkJ5fn2SVAOVMMR19Q2GT8cY6IAHAV3YrI4Ngejg
That fixes the “problem” with original PS, but the OP seems to want to go manual steering. @Xman , which is it, make it better or manual?
Xman said he wants to go non power. That part I show replaces the valve assemble at the pitman arm end of the drag link. Seller discription But what it does not say is it will bolt directly to your exciting pitman arm/steering box and drag link therefore making it manual steeeing.
Yes, I want to remove the P/S and go straight manual steering. The easy way would be to just remove the original power parts and not replace anything. Would that work or do I need specific manual parts? Thx
All you need is what I posted to do exactly what you just requested. Don’t like using eBay?, Woody’s is who took over Danchuk.
Mine was apart when I got it, (57 Belair) the PS cylinder was off the tie rod and the PS pump was gone, it bolts to the back of the generator. I drove it like that for a couple of years with no problem. I converted to an Alternator because I hated the splined shaft sticking out of the generator and the fact that it wasn't sealed to the elements. Pat
As far as I know, no. I know several people that have done this modification and never complained that it was any harder to steer than any other TriFives that came from the factory with manual steering.
Leave the power steering and change the upper A-arms to the CPP ones that add 5° more caster. It will feel more positive. If you add decent radial tyres, 0°-1° negative camber, and a decent swaybar [ARB] it will improve handling exponentially
