I am researching the history of the Velociteers Car Club that was in Ashtabula OH during the 1950's. Looking for information/references/photos about the club and the race car in the photo below taken at 1956 Bonneville.
@Don Moyer to the white courtesy phone please. Would the SCTA keep records of entries? Maybe that could provide a name? Would they have hosted any shows or cruises, maybe at Presque Isle or Geneva-on-the-Lake? Land Speed Shop was in Ashtabula on West Prospect, maybe that would provide another lead? I grew up in the '70's in Geneva, 10 miles west of Ashtabula. Will ask some old friends' dads. Hope this helps.
I spoke to one individual who was not a member but knew some older guys when he was younger who were but they are no longer alive. He also had the Velociteers license plate shown in my post above which was great to see the colors. I had only seen a black and white photo of it. The photo of the red modified above was a lucky find on eBay. I have no other references to this car. Here is an undated newspaper clipping:
There are online archives of many local newspapers that can be searched by keyword - I know my brother has accessed some of them doing genealogy searches for our family. Perhaps you could check into that to see if you can find other news stories about the club.
Figured it out. The Velociteers lakester was owned by Lee Pendleton and ran at 1954 Bonneville. Photo from November 1954 Hot Rod Magazine:
Do you know if your father went with Lee Pendleton to Bonneville in 1954? Here is a photo from Petersen Archives with I assume Lee and two other Velociteer members. Unfortunately Lee passed away this summer before I was able to talk to him.
When I visited Ashtabula in 1990 my wife's stepfather took me to a few greybeards' garages around Ashtabula, Conneaut, and Jefferson to check out their rides. I don't recall their names right now, but I'll see if I can dig up their contact info out my stash of papers and business cards. If these guys are still around, they may have some info on the club. HRM Feb 1955 issue has a small article on Ralph Neal and his roadster. Leonard Sobecki moved to Winston-Salem, NC and worked in the automotive repair industry until a few years before his passing in 2005. Perhaps he shared his history with some of the Winston-Salem Camel City Skulls members on the HAMB.
i dont know but i have pictures of the same car at the flats back then he moved to california in 54 and was at the flats ill see if i can scan more pics and ill post them this week end
