Because when it was said the officials walked out to the parking lot and measured a bone stock one and “everything they checked” was the same as his. I’m not saying he didn’t fudge the rules it’s just too easy when 2 , even race cars on the same track racing the same day, are 1/8” per 1” smaller the naked eye can see it in a 5 foot wide 17 foot long car.
It’s what he did underneath the car to the floor pans and such that made the car fast.

I agree with @jimmy six , I’ve read that Smokey basically channeled the body 2” and added a really slick floor pan. Not a belly pan but a floor pan without all the bumps and ridges.

    Hello,

We were all in shock on the Westcoast. It was the topic of conversation in the pits and stands. 200 mph in the quarter mile? As it was reported in the local Drag News weekly paper, it was the fastest missing paper from the news racks in most speed shops. Everyone wanted to read the information. Be awed or not… we had to go to 3 speed shops to get our copy and luckily, there were at least 5 dealers or shops nearby our house.

Stories and columns were all written with some sort of awe. In reading the articles, it was an amazing feat.

My brother and I happened to be at Riverside Raceway in Dec. of 1959 to see the awesome FED race cars from all over the USA in one huge drag meet. Interesting was the key for teenagers…

Another shot from Riverside in Dec. 1959. This was the first of many pilgrimages to the West Coast. Note the addition of the "Speed Sport" blower scoop and the header style that the car "wore" most of the time after this. Over the winter the car was lengthened, the rear end was moved forward and the chassis painted Black.

Then, the stories came pouring in from all over…

Possible 204 mph in the quarter mile? Impossible you say… in 1959-60?
    upload_2024-11-11_4-20-27.png you be the judge…
