I've not had any luck with their Currie 9 inch third member. Pinion bearings went out after 5K miles, still in warranty so they replaced the bearings and the bearings went out after 5K again. I got a SpeedMaster third member next; so far so good.
Not on a compleat rear, A few years ago I ordered a 3rd member , according to the ad at that time they were built to order, When I received in a Red protective storage case ,was covered in rust , Not surfaced rust , Like sitting around for some time , Metal shaving inside 3rd member, After going round & round with pics emails, On disassembling the bearings where heavy rusted ,races where pitted also ,I replaced & rebuilt 3rd member , First time I had a problem with custmer service , I have only had few issues since mid 80s with & miner , Alway taken care of , But 3rd member was a headache , cost me few hundred & 3 weeks of wasted time , I was lead that they where going to send Overhaul kit ..
I sold a few of their 9 inch centers with my chassis with no problems but have started using Quick Performance.
I've had very good luck with QP as well. The fact that they are fairly local (less than 2 hrs away) does give me that extra piece of mind when using them. If you go that route and they don't ship internationally, guessing since your profile says Japan, I'd be happy to help figure out how to get it to you. Just shoot me a PM if you need a hand.
Does anyone build their own third members themselves anymore? It’s a whole lot cheaper. Find a good core ( plentiful) ring and pinion kit and bearings.
seem like Op is in Japan , I would not think 9 inch not a common part/availability. Even here in Va Not to far from you , Many , Many Junk yards/ salvage yards Crushed out alot of availability since 2008 BS thinking , In Nokesville old junk yard cloesed up few years back, started scraping Out , I knew one of scrapers , I punched 4 compleat 9 rears for $200 , all 4 where cut down & used , I should of purchased a few more .
I don’t have experience with speedway I use Moser and have good experiences. I use early bronco rearends right width and most have 3:54 gears. Plus the correct 5x5 1/2 bolt pattern with big brakes.. I wish you were closer as I have a few..
Yes, I do. But to do it right required that I made a few tools to make the job go easier. Spanner wrench for the carrier bearings Dial indicator for measuring case spread Spline ends with socket attachment for measuring limited slip break-away torque Carrier attachment for an engine stand or a vise Torque wrenches measuring foot-pounds and inch-punds Additionally, it helps to have an array of assembly shims of varying thicknesses and a few crush collars and solid pinion bearing spacers ( depending on street or race) to make assembly quicker. I assume nowadays you can look up how to assemble a nine inch pig on YouTube. Knowing going in what it takes tool wise and proceedure wise will help you decide if its worth doing it yourself or farm it out to a pro. Even if you farm it out study the job and ask pertainent questions of the pro to be assured your pro knows how to do it right.
Another vote for Quick Performance. Very reasonable and built one at a time to order, I had a question and the guy called me on a Sunday to help me out. I won't go anywhere else after my experience on a couple different diffs from them.
I had just begun shopping but decided to look here for inspiration and/or feedback regarding Speedway third members. Glad I looked! Thanks guys for sharing experiences, this will shape my decision in a good way!
I still do my own , the Dana 60’s in the Power Wagon were terrible . My new favorite is the Ford 8.8 . I have plenty of 9 in stuff laying around to keep me rolling for years
Paid for one ten years ago. Only peeve was my housing ended up being 50.625 instead of the ascribed 51”. Unfortunately didn’t realize/measure until I fought with axle seal leak for a year. Finally got pissed and yanked the assembly and double checked everything on the bench. Imagine how stupid I felt and how pissed I was. Reassembled and reinstalled after trimming axle shafts to correct lengths and bobs your uncle. Car has been the road now for nine years with zero year end issues.
As always thanks all for the awesome feedback and kind offer @snoc653 ! Yes sourcing one direct here in Japan is a PITA Will look at the Quick Performance. Once again thanks!
