Veteran's Day again. I used to look forward to it, meet up with my best vet car buddy, go to breakfast for 2-3 hours and do what those types do. He drove his 51 chevy/350 and my '55 w/355. Neither of us ever won the talk. We went to all the nostalgia drags close by, car shows, every type of event you could name. He p***ed 3 years ago and now, while i truly appreciate the purpose and meaning, i kinda dread the day. As a salute from the heart, I make a strong drink, go to the garage, and give a toast to him while sitting in the car. Somehow I can hear him say, "this brick? well, i have a tow strap and phone- and insurance" Thanks for your service.
Don’t worry hepme.. He’s looking down watching everything you do….just your mentioning him will bring a smile to his face!
I don't think there are many of us older vets who haven't lost a close buddy who was also a vet in the past few years. I lost the one who was far more big brother than just best friend a few years ago and the other one is in a nursing home with an advanced stage of dementia and doesn't recognize anyone. Still Veterans day is for the living. This is me in mid 1968 looking out the door of my hooch built out of 2.75 rocket boxes that I and a couple of my buddies pulled the rockets out of and ***embled and stacked them at the ammo dump so I could get the boxes. Thinking back all the rockets we ***embled so I could get the boxes probably armed two Cobras for one go around. I must have already been on R&R because I had the gold Seiko watch that I bought in the An Khe PX on that I bought when I went on R&R and went to Kuala Lumpur. Dave, A troop 1/9 Cav blues than scout observer 1968. ` If I get my OT friggin Ford back together tomorrow I might convince my wife to swing by the VFW tomorrow. I belong to the Renton post but that is a ways away.
May their courage and sacrifice never be forgotten trivialize or made politically correct. Thanks to all the vets on the hamb
