I say that if you have to ask, you already know the answer. If you were truly in love, it wouldn't be a question of whether you should do it or if you were just being a chicken shit. Wait. You'll know. It's kind of hard to explain, but imagine being struck by lightning in the most pleasant "every hair on my body is standing on end and I'm seeing spots" kind of way.

    Besides .. it's a 4-door. ;)

Since I saw my first 56 Nomad when I was 15, I wanted one, and didn't find one that was both good enough and affordable enough until I was 34 (16 years ago!).

In the meantime, I bought and enjoyed a 66 Caprice 2 dr with 396, two 55 Chevy 2 dr sedans, a 65 Catalina with 389, a chopped and channeled, fenderless, primered Model A coupe (before the term rat rod was invented), a 70 GTX, a 53 Chevy pickup, a 53 Ford pickup with a 350 horse 327Chevy engine, a 56 Ford pickup, a 69 Roadrunner, a 72 Duster, a 55 Fairlane 2 dr sedan, a pink 57 Coupe de Ville, and others that I forget. None of them were my dream Nomad, but they were cool cars to have fun with until the Nomad deal was finally made. This ain't your one and only old car. It's a good one to get your feet wet with, and you can (and will) find something else down the road that catches your fancy, at which time you will gladly sell this one and buy the next one.

Some people approach the purchase of an old car as a once-in-a-lifetime-oh-lordy-I-hope-I-don't-make-the-wrong-decision event, and others look at it as the first of hopefully more purchases and lots of fun. I hope you're in the latter group. Have fun; that's the main thing.

Its a beautiful car, I'd give you a biased opnion since I LOVE 59-60 Chevrolets as if to get it or not, but based on the looks the current owners reputation and from what you said I dont see a reason not to buy it inless its just not something you know in your heart that you dont want then I'd say pass on it. It looks to be in amazing shape though, if I had a garage and an income (student) I'd be asking you to pm me the guys info becuase I'd take it in a heartbeat.

Looks like a decent car, and for a four door, a four door hardtop is the one to have!

I buy a ton of cars and keep them for a bit and fix em up then buy another. if it doesnt keep you up at night then i wouldnt buy it. I bought a pile of shit 51 ford and i was so excited about it i oculdnt sleep untill i got it. If you think about it will you have your heart and soul into this car to treat it right or will it just be another car to you. Sure its clean and in you price range but hel;l there is tons of decent cars out there for under 7k just dont rush into it cause you want a car.

Call me before you cum in your pants. Jesus boy... I have a few questions about what I see with paint overspray in the pics. But like I told you.
    1) Is she what you really really want?
    2) Did you walk down the hill? Or run?
    3) Can you live with her now that she is pregnant?

In my office for the next two hours and you got my cell.

These are awesome questions....Will the car be what you wanted when you finish it? Otherwise after a bit you will be looking to get out of it...which is okay too.

  16. From the sound of how you feel about it I'd pass. You don't sound enthused.

Looks like a fair deal to me if you like the car. If you're not so excited about it though, keep looking. What exactly are you not excited about? I helped a buddy buy his first old car a few years ago. He wanted an early 60's Impala and we looked at a whole mess of them. We found a really nice, well maintained original '62 four door that he almost bought...but he wasn't excited about it. He waited and a few months later found a '63 SS for a little more money that needed some minor work. He still has the car, and still loves it. If this car doesn't give you that good feeling, wait til you find the one that does. 7 grand is enough money for quite a nice car.

We all know that the value strata is convert - 2 door - 4 door -(high to low) so the guys purchasing a car to restore are advised to stay away from the less desirable body styles; hell- if somebody gave you a funky four-door for free you would lose money if you tried to sell it after a restoration. But... the other side of this coin is that it makes it hard to find a good four-door, most folks lavish care and $$ on coupes and converts. So, if a four door is your poison, buy a good one; it doesn't pencil to make a good one out of a bad one. This car looks nice, if it is really what you want, make your best deal
    and drive it.

They're all in the classifieds, just a few miles from your house. Check the paper the day after you buy a car - you'll see 'em.

There is ALWAYS going to be a better deal out there somewhere. May be your closest buddy or your worst enemy, but somebody will fill you ear about how much of a better deal they got.

    Screw'm

If you have the cash, if your better half gives the green light, if your trusted car buddies give it a thumbs up.... buy it. Most important of all buy it if YOU like it.

Don't worry about getting your money back for it. How much profit did you make when you sold or traded-in you last late model car?? Did you at least break even ...NO.

  22. Welcome to the world of cars, love and women. Sometimes the order changes but the emotions will always drive you nuts. If its a first buy you got to get your feet wet sometime and it appears that the car is a reasonable one to start with. Can it be used as a stepping stone to your desired car? . Sometimes buying and trading up is a good way to get to your desired car or even offset the cost of that new paint job. Keep a short list of the cars that interest you and the criteria they need to meet for your purchase and be ready to pull the trigger when the opportunity arrives. The good thing about cars is that they dont get mad if you bring another one home but dont try that with a woman.

You'd have money left over for shipping (or you could take a nice trip to Texas) and some to make it yours. For the most part, I think buying from a HAMBer is a bonus as well.

Not to pour cold water on this deal but some things I'd check for having owned several 60 Chevs, rust in the rear floor wells under the carpet, front fenders just above the headlights (rust/bondo) same at lower rear of front fenders, same on rocker panels full length and in trunk. It's hard to say from the pictures but since that red oxidizes rapidly and other clues the car looks like a repaint that could be covering myriad problems. All those problems can be fixed but for 7K? I have always preferred to buy pretty much untoched stuff then I knew what I had. There is a relativley cheap tool for checking for bondo (eastwood maybe?) Just my fwiw. Good luck.

  25. from the pics it looks like a decent buy. but, you don't like it. if you liked it you wouldn't be rethinking it. like hotrodladycruiser said, find the car you can't quit thinking about. don't just buy a car because it's in your price range.

I usually dont like and wouldnt buy a 4 dr car.
    Except for a few exceptions.
Those flat roof '59 and '60 GM cars are so unique they stand up to "DrJ's cool test".
My Dad gave me his Olds 98 when I was a teenager in the 60's and I just called a junk yard and had them come and pick it up.
I didn't want to be seen driving a 4dr sedan even to the junk yard!

But I was actually looking for one of those flat roofs a couple years ago when my Wife found me the short flat roof version, the '60 El Camino.

I'm concerned with that one in that the seller lied about the paint. it's definitely repaint... Maybe he just meant it's the same as the original color?
Also, where that silly door edge guard is on the front edge of the front door.. There shouldn't be enough room to fit it in there if the frender is aligned right and if it's not, is it too bent from the "wreck" to make it fit? It looks like the left fender is away from the rocker panel a taste.

Also check for rust in the rocker panel right at the fender, and check under neath right there for rusted out cowl vent chamber where the air goes in the cowl, around and down and into the kick panel. They get full of leaves and then rust out.
And check for rusted out floors in the rear seat foot wells and under the rear seat
Floor repair panels are available but they're about $100 a section, and there's 6 sections, plus their a job to in$tall/weld in.
These aren't reasons to not buy it if you want it but they are reasons to not pay too much.
I bought my (actually Wife bought it for me) '60 ElCamino knowing it needed these very things but it was $2000
If everything mechanical is really in good shape it's worth around the $7000(?)

Damn right, so would I. You're not buying it thinking it's original anyway. For 7k you can't go wrong unless it's a total rot box under the paint. Get it checked on a lift so you can see what it looks like underneath and in the wells. Body mounts ,bracings etc. look it over real good then make a decision. If it turns out ok, go for it .That car in upstate NY would already be gone.

"I think there is something better out there..."

I'm with GoozGaz here.... There will ALWAYS be better cars/deals out there... don't get stumped over that.

    My opinion;
BUY the car, you only live once, DRIVE the car with friends/family, spend some time with it/her...

... and, if by any chance you get bored of it, just SELL it. It's that simple.
I'll doubth you lose much cash if that would happen. And then again, if so, chalk it up as "learning-money"...
I guess a couple of Supremes will do quite nicely under her... ;)

  30. Listen, if you ain't got a stiffy for it now, you probably never will. Move along and don't look back. You've got time on your side, so keep beating the bushes looking for something that makes your spine tingle. When you find that one, calm down and have your buddies look at it. If they give you the OK, THAT's the one to buy.

I know I'm gonna twist some undies with this statement - It's only a car.

Detroit made MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of cars. If it don't get you in gut, it's just a car. If it gets you in the gut, then it's more. That's the time to buy.
