Back in the late 60's I worked at a bodyshop that bought cars that had engine fires to fix up and sell. We would make sure they were not locked up, put new carbs, hoses, vacuum lines, and wiring harnesses on them. Never had one that didn't run after we did that. But these were cars that just had engine fires. Not cars that burned in a garage or other building, which get much hotter.

Got the engine home, heads look good but the number 2 cylinder has a bad gouge in it like a ring busted. So I'm scrapping the block and keeping the heads for future projects.

Depending on how deep the score is, it can be bored oversize.

Keep the crank and rods for that 302 build!

    It’s a 283, right? Couldn’t many of them go .120/.125 over?

Yes, was done at one point.
IIRC, depends on the year of the block.
    Earlier ones were thicker.

I bought a burnt corvette once. was using for parts, I sold the transmission,to a friend,
he brought it back, because close inspection you could see everything that was bolted together was warped? The fire got that hot! JUNK! so, look close!

.040 pistons, the gouge is so deep that wouldn't clean up.

I would imagine the fiberglass probably burnt hotter.

Post a picture of gouge if possible.
