@65pacecar posted this barn find '57 Bel Air. What a time capsule! Shackles, T70 wheels with Goodyears, Thrush side pipes too short for the car, (haha), tape deck and tach, cal custom wheel & pedal trim. But the thing that really grabbed me is the wind wings above the windows. Like they start at the windshield and sweep back to the quarter window. Never have I seen these. @Moriarity just might have.

 

They were a J.C.Whitney accessory

This is a slick, trick '57 hardtop that a friend of mine sold a few years ago. Man, if I'd have been able to come up with the coins....

A recent artwork build of our own version of a custom Nomad surf style station wagon… 4 door hardtop Nomad Station Wagon…


Hello,

Our 1958 black Impala had seen its glory days of drag racing from the fall of 1957 to the fall of 59 and some days into the 1960 early months. But, now, between our days in the back yard doing some hard tear down and custom assembly of our latest hot rod project, was a fairly pristine 1940 Willys Coupe we found in our own neighborhood. Now, had it apart to put back together, hot rod/drag race style.

It was the hardest, most detailed thing we had ever done and my brother had it all laid out in his brain. (he did write it down on a small poster board for the big steps + some detailing build sections…) but, between high school classes and then afterschool, spending time until dinner in the backyard garage doing some assembly or two. After dinner, homework for an hour or so, then out to the cold backyard garage to continue our assembly of various sections until 11 or so p.m.

To change up the daily procedure, we did take some time to go surfing, locally and spend the weekends at Lion’s Dragstrip or at the local surf spots until dark. It was a nice break from the detailed engine or car construction work. Then of course, our Friday nights were set aside for our own teenage friends’ activities. He had his own friends and they did their own thing in different parts of town.

We originally used the 58 Impala for our surf adventures, as it was the only car that could hold longboards with a flag. But, there was a blind spot in the two door coupe, over the shoulder and a trunk lifted up to blind the rear view mirror, too.

During our time building and racing our 1940 Willys Coupe in the B/Gas and C/Gas Class, our goal was to tow back to the Nationals in Detroit in 1960. If Yellow was selected (silver was the other choice) and a 56 Chevy Wagon was used, the combination would have looked like the above drawing.

But, we knew about SBC motors and thought that was the way to go for us. We had picked out a 55 and a 56 Chevy two door wagon for our towing adventures to the Nationals. That was part of the plan. But, of course, things just did not work out as planned.

So, the new plan during the recovery stage from the Willys Coupe adventure was a 2 door 1955 Chevy Wagon that would hold our two or more longboards with ease. Inside would have plenty of space for passengers or beach/camping stuff.

Note:

Yes, there is a real 2 door 56 Chevy Nomad. This version gives a better overall clear sight from all points. But, has one ever looked over the right shoulder for blind spots while driving in a normal 56 Chevy Nomad? The angular post of the “normal” 56 Nomad temporarily blocks the all around vision given to most station wagons. Perhaps, we are all accustomed to a straight post and not the sleek angle post… YRMV
