Thanks to @Jive-Bomber I found another one. I think it's been restored for quite some time, but I just missed it.

I don't have much history on the car when it ran the dry lakes before Creighton Hunter owned it but maybe our resident prewar dry lakes expert @Jimmy B or @jnaki could chime in on this one.

    Hello,

My brother and I had started our 1940 Willys Coupe build with a 292 c.i. SBC blower spec motor with a new 671 supercharger. The complete new Isky-Gilmer kit for SBC motors was given to our friend in Los Angeles as he was friends with the Edlebrock folks and Isky Cams folks.

When we mentioned a 671, the complete kit was just starting to be readied for deliveries to the local speed shops. So, we were able to get one of the first units. The Isky-Gilmer Belt Drive, sprockets, different gears and toothed belt as well as the Edlebrock custom manifold for the 671.

But, as our limited budget was emptied and then restocked, then emptied, folks like John Mazmanian was on the other end of the spectrum. His later model build of a 41 Willys Coupe was completely finished and as money seemed like no object, all of the top of the line parts were included in the build. I was able to film the finished Candy Apple version in 1964 at Lion’s Dragstrip.

It was the first all Gas Coupe and Sedan Drag Race Meet ever held anywhere in the USA.

While walking around the pits like I used to do during our time at the dragstrip, filming the top Gas Coupes and Sedans was a return to the memory lane time period for me. Our close friend, Atts Ono had just finished his immaculate build of a 40 Willys Coupe and was ready to race. His finished 40 Willys Coupe arrived on the drag racing scene with his version for the B/Gas cl***.

Atts Ono worked on his custom 1940 Willys Coupe to perfection. It had a bright red color and was captured many times over at Lion’s Dragstrip by numerous photographers. Yet, it looks as if it just stepped out of a hospital clean workspace… without a front bumper. By 1964, the Gas Coupe/Sedan Cl*** rules had eased off and cars raced without front bumpers, but had to have a gas tank no longer in the cab. YRMV

    Thanks,

A custom installation behind the grille and sitting on machined mounts, without having a blob sitting outside, in front of the whole front end…

But, one could not leave the dragstrip with such powerful race cars and color to boot.

As a young kid, several decades ago, I'd obviously never seen the before pic, and didn't think to imagine a man sitting on top. The green house most likely formed my opinion of it's size, since the family station wagon was my only yard stick.

Seeing these two photos snaps that scale into reality. I'm sure Id try it out when I was a rowdy teenager, but in my 50's, I'll be having none of that.
