Need to order a pulley or two for my engine along with a belt. Are the 153s same as the sixes or sbc for pulleys and belts? I’m not running anything other than an alternator. 2nd question. After I find the correct pulleys, it’s still looking like the offset to the alternator isn’t going to line up. This is a 1 wire GM style, but it’s from a model a. Is the pulley on the end of the alternator going to have to change? Or do I have the wrong mount for it? Hopefully you can tell what I’m talking about from the pic. Thanks
might help to get the correct lower pulley, which is offset to the rear...then the upper pulley for the v8 will fit, and you can get the normal narrow pulley for the alternator. https://www.ebay.com/itm/387586972933 https://www.ebay.com/itm/330410190205 https://www.ebay.com/itm/126468559759 I looked this stuff up in the 64-75 Chevy car parts book, it might work, or it might not...
Definitely need to change that alternator pulley, but looks like you could still have an alignment issue with it.
look closely at the lower pulley in my first ebay link...it's set up to be offset to the rear of the hub, so it lines up with the alternator and a normal V6 type fan pulley. The six used a damper, the 4 used a hub. The damper for the six has a belt groove (or two) in it. You might be able to use that instead of the hub and pulley...but the offest lower pulley would be the way it was done originally.
I used a generator from a pre 1965(?) 6 cylinder engine because it looked more at home in my AVATAR. Get the pulley from the same engine. Charlie Stephens
The 153 is 2/3 of a 230 six. Everything on the front is the same except for what is on the crank. (hub vs dampener) The 181 uses a dampener but I don't know how that would work on a 153. It will fit. Nice clean engine. What is it going in?
The Water pump is the same one used on 230/250 up through 74 according to Rock Auto. Checking the O'Reilly's compatability list that same pump fits the 153, 194,230 & 250 from 1963 through 1974. Non AC versions. The water pump pulley is deeper on the 4 and six than on a V8 as I pressed the hub back on the shaft on the one on my 250 and used A V8 pulley to get the fan back from the radiator. I don't recommend that unless you just flat need the space between the fan and the radiator though as if you have a pump go out on the road you will have to press the hub back and cut the end of the shaft off to get the replacement to fit.
The V8 wp pulley I linked to fits the 4 and 6 and V8, per the Chevy parts book.... (the term "Chevy" in the parts book refers to Chevy II)
