Been in the market for a new project car for a little while now and haven't found anything local to me that I like. I've been a swap meet guy most of my life, Carlisle and was a 30 year Autofair guy until they ruined that event. Going to be heading to Moultrie for the first time this year. My question is to those that have bought projects at swap meets or other places that are a long way from home. 8 plus hours for me on this one, how do you go about getting a car shipped home on such short notice?

  3. If you are planning on purchasing
any vehicle at a distance that you
can’t drive home and are expecting
to have it leave when you do …

Drive a tow vehicle and have
    a verified rental trailer reservation
where you are planning on buying
it at so you can take it home …

  4. Moultrie is still good, car corral has been fairly full lately, not too many cheap Chinese or seconds tool sellers and still lots of old car goodies. I always seem to find something and go home with sore feet from walking so much. Weather has been great here lately too so hopefully it will hold out a little bit longer.

On getting one back, if you drive a truck, you can always try a U-haul trailer rental and do it yourself. Also Ive seen a lot of cars that are trailered in and the trailer is part of the deal.

I'm not really concerned about the car needing to head back home at the same time as I do. Just curious about how to arrange to get one home. My one and only experience with auto shipping went very badly

  6. Winter has started and with
    it comes winter weather
    driving conditions …

    Vendors usually have full
    trailers coming to and leaving
swap meets - if you aren’t
    going to take and/or rent
    equipment to transport a
    possible purchase - you will
    find it difficult finding anyone
    at the meet to transport
    and/or store for you …

    Odds are slim you will
    find anyone who wants
    to do this trip should
    you find something
    you want to buy …

That's why I was looking for suggestions. Taking my own transport just isn't an option at this time

  9. We drove ours home- way back in the early 90s. It was a 66 barracuda with a k car for a chase vehicle- all the way back to Canada, with an Italian Harley Davidson trail bike in the trunk of the K car. It took a little while to clear the border. Those were the days.

I think if it were me and I was doing an 8 hour one way trip, I’d talk to the seller. Let them know you have to get home and make transport arrangements. Explains @trulyvintage said, “it’s winter” and the car may have to sit until spring time.
Work the deal, leave the seller a deposit, one that let him know you’re serious, and one you can afford to lose without sleepless nights.
Then head home, and start looking for transport.

Another option is check with rental place in the area. Can you rent a truck and trailer, leave your car on the property for a week, then return the rental and drive your car home.

Honestly I'm in a state of not really sure until I see it. I've been doing Corvettes for the last few years and all i'm sure of is that it is time for something different

  13. Short notice would be the only issue for one of the Quality Guys in the Hamb O Dex section:

(David Robert Phelps, Gearhead 78, BenD or Myself) as we are usually booked well in advance.

Sometimes we are looking to fill an opening between two others that might fit. That is a very common route for thousands of transporters, but picking an honest one that is also a car guy is always an issue. Give me a call or P.M. & if I can help you great, if not I will pass along the info of the guys I trust 100% with my customer overflow!

  14. For the OP and anyone
    else requiring transport
    of a vehicle and/or parts …

If you end up buying a vehicle
I started a thread here on the
    HAMB for members to help
    each by posting their transport
    needs and their availability to
transport - no businesses are allowed

Thanks to everyone here that offered suggestions and help. I solved the shipping problem yesterday, as I picked up a really solid 57 Studebaker Hawk that was semi local to me. Now I can just go to Moultrie and shop for parts

  16. Congratulations Sir!

Make sure to join the Studebaker Drivers Club Forum. A great group of folks that I transport a bunch of cars for, lots of info & parts for sale as well.

Thanks Bill! I will be sure to do just that, I'm sure I will have my share of questions, I've never worked with a Stude before
