Anyone have any knowledge whether the bell housing of a 53 studebaker automatic transmission which is a borg warner transmission will bolt to a early fordomatic ,as both seem similar in the borg warner design

The '53 Studebaker V8s used the Borg-Warner DG200, a very advanced three-speed transmission with a lockup torque converter. It turned out to be too expensive to produce and by 1956 was replaced by the Borg-Warner shared with Ford, known there as the Fordomatic.

I'd always thought that Packard had the first regular production auto transmission with a lock-up torque converter with their "Ultramatic". According to Curbside Classics, Studebaker beat them by a year or two.

The link below will give you some more details about the operation of the Stude's Borg-Warner DG transmission as well as some other early auto transmission designs.
