Common words in a shared language that we haven't got a clue...

One ball and I have traded words in the English language that a person on the other side of the pond might say, "WTF?"

Let's start with car related words. Boot. When I was a kid, this meant something to wear on the feet. Over there, trunk or trunk lid, I'm still not entirely sure. Bonnet. Something a little old lady wore on her head. Over there, what we call a hood.

There, I've started, now let's see if it has any legs...

are just a few

Gudgeon Pin=Wrist Pin

 

The boot is the luggage compartment, but also something to wear on the feet........... Elephants have trunks.
The boot lid is the luggage compartment cover, but has nothing to do with feet......... or elephants.
The bonnet is the engine bay cover, but also something an old lady wore on her head. She might also wear a hood...

I added “nil” aftermarket gauges under the dash of my car…

 

Windscreen is the front glass in a car, here in the states we call it a windshield.

In England a Saloon is what we call a Sedan. HRP

 

Here in the USA we call them Campers in the UK they are called Caravans.

We call them Crackers or cookies, the British call them Biscuits.

Here on the HAMB this thread is called OFF TOPIC. I don't have a clue as to what the British would call it. HRP

Crisp are what we call french fries. HRP

 

We call them caravans. [sometimes campers ,which are small pop-top caravans]
In NZ crackers are savoury and biscuits are sweet.


What about the Aussie and Kiwi saying of "Kick it in the guts"

 

Shopping cart/4 wheel dolly = Trolley

 

I think their chips are our French fries. And our potato chips are their crisps. But their bangers are sausages!

Yep, and you can look up "bell end" while you're there........

 

Trucks, delivery vans, etc in some areas of the UK are called a Lorry.

 

Derby=Bowler. Hats...

Shooting brake... isn't that a type of station wagon

 

In Germany flashing the OK hand sign is calling someone an asshole.

Bob's your Uncle, means it's good, done, finished. It refers to something that has been or being done.

The Brits may say tickety boo!

We have fries too. They’re thinner than chips.
Bangers name came about because of rationing in WW2 and the “filler” they put in sausages to make up for the lack of meat would make them explode if you didn’t pierce the skin.
