In spite of all my efforts not to, I've ended up learning something new today. I was under the impression that they were called bangers due to their being vaguely shaped like bombs. Your explanation seems to make better sense.

 

The Brits ( at least some ) seem to call a complete car a motor and any cool parts "a nice piece of kit"

A "lavatory", or "water closet", is affectionately called the loo. It can also be referred to as "the bog".....
