While going thru some old papers recently I discovered the original sales purchase agreement for the 66 Impala SS I bought new. It was Marian Blue with the white bucket seat interior and 4 speed. I had some of the emblems shaved, lowered it and it had Torque Thrusts. What is the best way of tracking down a car like this? Not much help locally. I am interested if it's still alive and if so where it's located. It was my first new car and I'd be interested in buying it back if possible. I've tried a couple search sites and when entering the Vin it comes up exactly what it is but I can't seem to get any further. Any suggestions?
what do you mean by this? What comes up? I did a search of the VIN for the 61 Chevy I had decades ago...it appeared in a "for sale" ad from a few years before. The car had been restored, and magically transformed from the 2bbl PG car I had, to a tripower 348 4 speed "original" car!
Probably some automated " VIN Decoder" thing. The last 6 digits are what matters, to trace your car. The odds of it surviving are pretty low, you know. And the odds of being able to find it from the VIN are also pretty low, even if it survives. Having been in an auction is likely the only way it would be on the internet.
OP wants to use the VIN to identify the current owner, so he can offer to buy it back. Are there tools or services available to do that?
yeah, I know that, I just didn't understand what he was seeing when he searched. Screen shots are very helpful
I was searching for a 41 Willys pickup that I had sold in ‘99. I still had the vin tag in my toolbox. Never got around to reinstalling it after I painted it. Anyways I gave the VIN to a private detective friend and he had the owner on the phone in about 20 minutes.
I have a buddy that is a wrecker driver. He obviously has connection with people (police) who can look this sort of thing up at least within the state. He found his 64 SS Impala this way recently.
Last time I asked the local sheriff to do a VIN check he turned me down. Something about needing to be a licensed car dealer?
I to would like to see photos of the car. Unfortunately that was almost 60 years ago when I wasn't into saving photos.
Thanks Phil. That's exactly what mine looked like, even the color but with Torque Thrusts and a slight lowering job.
Unbelievably today I stopped at the local tire store and a person of authority that will go unidentified was there and I showed him the sales invoice from 1966. I asked if there was any way of tracing it. He denied any knowledge of how to find it. He left and came back a few minutes later with the current owner and where the owner lived. Turns out it's only about 30 miles from where I live. Thru the internet I've found two possible people with the same name that I assume are father and son? I have their addresses and in the near future I'll head up there to hopefully complete the search?
Car had changed hands but only moved 15 miles Went to the town where the car is supposedly located, current owner owns the local bar. He was shagging supplies for the bar and restaurant. Bar lady said to come back Monday as he's to busy on Friday & Saturday to talk. She said he had quite a few cars stored in buildings around town. We'll see what happens then?
The car exists. Current owner is a bit evasive. Talked to his wife Tuesday at the bar he owns. I left my contact information but she said I was wasting my time. I doubt if she gave him the information? I'll give it one more shot then drop it. Sure like to buy it but I doubt that'll ever happen?
Just go into it with "I just would like to see my old car. get pictures ect" No pressure on either end.
He might want to know how you found him, then the LEO that ran the V.I.N and gave you the info has a problem . Just a thought.
I'll never divulge my sources. If it would come down to that I'll just get in the truck and ride away into the sunset.
I have decided to walk away. The current owner is not receptive to my communications and is very defensive. Sometimes you got to know when to hold em and know when to fold em. At least I know where it's at.
It's unfortunate that not all car guys are friendly, but at least you know the car never wound up in the crusher and isn't far away. I would reach out to the wife once more and put it in her ear that you'd be interested in buying your old car back if they entertain the idea of selling it. Give them your contact info and wait. Also, public information is just that. I'd bet I can probably find this bar owner's information using public information with only the clues you've left me in this thread. Don't worry about him getting upset about "how" you got the information, it's all above board.
As a closing move today I sent him a nice letter explaining how everything transpired plus a copy of the 1966 sales order. At the end I told him if he ever decides to sell it I'm a player. If anything happens I'll post it down the road.
