A Buick straight 8 hooked me into hot rodding at age 14!
I was reading one of the small books, Car Craft or Rod & Custom in about '57.
It was about a '40 Ford 2 door sedan with a straight 8 at Bonneville(?).
The title of the article is still burned into my brain...

"BUICK STRAIGHT 8 HAULS A HOUSE ON JUICE!"

It was a multi carbed straight 8 burning alcohol.
I bet someone here has that mag. It was when the mags. were small.(55-57?)
Sure would like to read that article again.

This may have been asked before, but I haven't found it. Will the 40-41 dual carb intakes fit a 53 263. I've heard they will and they won't. Also, The factory 3 speed tranny. Which years fit which, etc. I have a 53 Special, 3 speed manual. I've had it for a few years but I am not a straight eight expert yet. So I am asking those of you that are. Thanks in advance!

  3. How long are Buick 8 rocker arms (center to center)?

I'm looking for a replacement for my '28 Chevrolet rockers that are 3 1/4" center to center:

the early 2 year only compound carb dual intake and split exhaust manifolds will swap between the 243 and 263 engines they will not swap onto a 320 as it is a physically bigger in size engine dont have an answer for transmission swaps go read buicks.net and get on the straight eight messgae board its a decent source of combined knowledge

I don't know if this will help, but some of the guys I vintage dirt track race with run these things. They seem to make a lot of power, and I have heard from more than one of them that they overbore a 320 1/4" and use International Harvester tractor pistons to make them over 350 CI. I have seen them with the stock dual manifolds and a couple with homemade logs with 5 or 6 97's.:)

If you have no other luck try Rocker Arm Specialist a HAMB vendor who will fix you up.

My father had a soft spot for the buick straight 8, in the late fiftys early sixtys my dad was a dirt modified racer and the rule at the local tracks were flatheads and inlines. I come from a diehard ford family ,my grandfather and father both worked for ford at one time. dad took a 36 buick coupe and put the 320 centry motor with mutiple carbs and dominated the local tracks for several years until the overheads took over. he said he looked in a motors manual for the biggest cubic inch inline he could find.
