Hey all Long time no post. Time to catch up. I just got home from the Oct 15 Pomona swap meet today where I saw this very cool 1 off Mercury "truck". Southern california rodders no doubt recognize this one, it's supposidly been around almost 15 years. Everywhere it stopped people were drawn to it like flys around premium grade shit. Owner says the bed is off a '50 Canada Mercury truck, it sits on an early 90's Ford F-350 frame, back cab area is all hand fab, and it runs a gasoline engine. A shop did the work, but it seems to me even pro jobs can have good taste!
WTF? I saw the truck in person once somewhere...I'm thinking it was in Florida at an NSRA show or maybe at the Turkey Run. Well done, and damn original. I'd gladly drive it. Brad
That truck was built by someone I know here in FLA I believe. The Merc looked like it was hit by a train before he saved it. I think it's pretty cool, definately different and useful to boot.
Except for the wheels, it almost looks like it could have been a factory job. Only thing I'd change is I'd step up to a Powerstroke.
the only thing that would make that more cool is if the guy made it a cabover... I saw one in a model car magazine once. very cool.
Ultimate Swap Meet Truck ?????? I Bet That Abortion Has Never Hauled Anything Except An Ice Chest Of Wine Coolers & The Owners Change Of Cargo Shorts And His Hawiian Shirt Covered With Lil Mercurys ! Can You Say ""i Have To Much Money & No Taste""
Damn cool retro hauler...Anyone can own a duelly...it' not everyday you see a "Mercuelly"!..Thanks for the pics...
I'd rather have too much money and no taste, then no money and no taste. When I saw it in Florida, there were parts in the back. And it was parked in the spectator parking area, not on the show field. You know, right next to everyone esle's stuff, subject to door dings and other parking lot rash. Brad
I agree, it needs a diesel. If you are going to do any SERIOUS hauling you need Rudolph's brainchild for power. The bodywork is nicely done. Better looking wheels would be hard to find for a dually. There are more "custom" aluminum wheels being made for the diesel truck aftermarket; but they are all the "billet-styled" stuff that is an anathema here. He could get some original F5 or F6 wheels that Ford used and either have them chromed or powdercoat them shiney. Only thing is the stock Ford dually wheels might not be wide enough for the "E" load-rated tires necessary for serious hauling.
Like it, love it, or not...there is an astounding amount of hours into that body...and it's gloss black to top it off...I can't imagine the fab work that went into that...it's amazing for what it is.
Most of the car/truck conversions I've seen over the years have been real hack jobs. When somebody has the idea, but not the talent. From what you guys that have seen this say & the pics, this one looks like a nice job. I like it for him.
I recall seeing an Australian '49 Merc "ute" on ebay before. Real nice looking foreign production car/truck. All I could find googling is this Aussie '50 Ford "Ute". No heavy duty hauler by any means. This is a '47 right?
I've seen those done horribly... that's pretty nice. If it wasn't for the chrome duallies, it looks very 50's. Nice job.
Sounds like a like of envious bastards out there, that if they ain't got it, it's shit. If I had it, you damn right I would have cargo shorts, and a hawaian shirt w/'lil mercs on it. That truck is hotter than a four balled tomcat. ..Ole Pork
Followed a ute going home the other night......nothing like that daully though.....to me it looks like a hearse thats had a back section fabbed for the cab........Bert
There is a 65 or 66 Mustang in my area that was converted to a truck. It is pretty horrible looking. But good metal work or, not cars are not trucks. They look like inbred side show freaks when mated together. And I have some really out there ideas for cars and I can weld and build some one off shit. So my opinion is not one of jealousy. That Merc was a waste of a good car.
I gotta disagree with ya, "speedaddict", There's nothing uglier than a PT "poser", i mean cruiser!!! Honestly i think the trucks done very tastfully, and like someone wrote earlier, i'd just change the wheels, and maybe get it a little closer to the ground, my 2 cents. Thanks for the thread "Mighty". Ready to do the subframe?
