Technical Anyone seen or used these dropped axles ?

Found these tonight, it says they are forged and it shows a wide parting line.

I know anything can be faked that's why I'm asking. Other than ordering one and smacking it with a hammer to see if it rings I don't know of another way to prove if it's cast or forged other than hands on experience...

I am also interested to see if anyone else has any experience with this Axle.

Forged? Cast or both I would be very skeptical

 

I would look into finding a 29” wide spring also. That’s pretty dang narrow no stock ford spring is going to fit that axle.

 

Search for a thread called riderightparts from 2018 started by silent rick.

 

Several sellers on ebay with the same C22101 part number including drilled and also chrome versions. Hard to tell where they buy them.

Spend a little more money and buy from a reputable dealer/manufacturer. I just bought a made in the USA forged axle from P&J's. Retail $400.00. For years their axles were cast but a couple years ago they stepped up and did 46 & 47 inch forged axles. The quality is tops.

 

29” spring is off the shelf at Speedway. Actually I think all their axles are set up for a 29” spring

For $120 more, I'd buy an axle you can really count on. Not a place to cut corners.

 

Smells like Hoffman to me.

 

That axle just doesn't look like a forged axle due to the parting line.
Plus, it doesn't tell country of manufacture.
I wouldn't buy it.

That’s what I thought. Doesn’t Roadster Supply sell the same axle as SoCal did/does? Maybe the same manufacturer is selling to many vendors now?

 

Yeah I've checked roadster supply and they look like the same axle.

I don't think it's Hoffman group, as all I've seen they offer is cast. This axle is definitely forged if you follow the link by silent Rick.

As far as spending more that's not really the issue, I'm more interested in seeing IF someone is actually producing a product that is worth it. I don't think something has to cost X amount of dollars to be a good value. I've seen and used stuff that I've paid good money for that wasn't much better than lower cost stuff.

IF they are putting out a good product then I hope they find support thru paying customers in order to keep them making those parts, in the last 3 years I've seen many parts being dropped from production, some parts I've needed but can no longer buy, dropped bolt thru arms, wheel wells for my A, certain patch panels etc just to name a few.

I'm nervous about buying one BUT until someone does and someone uses it it's all hearsay and no real world experience to go off of for others. Someone has to be the guinea pig, really don't want to be but with more and more parts being discontinued we as a community are going to have to reach out to those either willing to or already making parts to see if those parts are worth buying.....

I'm just an old man with some car building experience. I know lots of you are doing this on a tight budget but as a group we gotta stop bending over to buy cheap Chinese parts. I know sometimes it can't be helped but we gotta start supporting parts made in the USA. I've used foreign mad parts in the past when nothing else was available but I didn't like it. Sure they (USA made)cost a little more but to me it's always been worth the extra to see American manufacturing companies survive and prosper. Parts like the above axle just cheapen the hobby. It only takes one major failure to cast a dark shadow over our hot rod hobby. BUY AMERICAN

 

With all the guys dropping real ford axles out there and doing a fantastic job of it. Original axle dropped for about the same price as this aftermarket one. Why settle for questionable aftermarket one. Just send them your axle and come to Chicago and hit some pot holes and you won’t have to worry about snapping the axle…

Damned close, the one sitting on the orange truck bed is mine. I can't remember if the king pin center to center is 47 or 48 but the center to center on the one I have and So Cal axles take a 29 inch spring.

I wonder if the outfit that forges the axles for SoCal has a sideline going.

It seems as though theyre the only ones making a 4" dropped I beam axle in a 46" width. I cant find anyone else making them, if anyone has any idea? Im debating getting a 46" one because I dont like the Superbell logo dead center, but maybe I can grind that off?

Wow ! who would have thought the incredible amount of labor involved to create a tube axle? I knew the metal had to be beat to death to create a forged example, but really mind boggling when considering all the dies, fixtures & level of skilled labor involved.

 

That reminds me of back in the late 90's I got an FFL license to sell guns. I was blown away at the dealers cost vs retail.

A rifle that cost 800.00 at a retail store I could buy for about 379.00, even cheap guns. A sks for example were selling for 119.00, my cost ? 49.00 in lots of 10.

So I know some places mark up is a lot more than cost. So because something is cheaper somewhere else doesn't always mean an inferior product. I sold my guns for cost plus 15% and shipping. Made good money, worked on volume vs cost.... same idea as the model T....

Sometimes it pays to take a chance. There are a couple of threads on "The Ford Barn" where guys bought the Chinese replacement carburetors, because of non-availability of originals and, well, just plain curiosity. Both times they reported that the carburetors were of excellent quality and 1/3 the price of domestic units. One example was a replacement Holley 94. I would consider one except for the fact that I have a couple of dozen originals that I rebuilt "just for fun".

 

I agree with Krylon32. Looking at the big picture and also down the road tells me that's the only way. I deal with Asian stuff all day, but I'd prefer to have a choice.

 

If you’re ordering online, you might have a. Better chance of getting “made in USA”, etc.
Tough thing to do if your water pump is leaking on a Sunday and you have to shop locally.

The photo of my SoCal Axle sitting on my truck bed was taken Sept 2012 when I first got it and I picked it up off Ebay as a shelf worn display axle. It was the axle they had in the trailer to haul around to shows for several years and the box shows it.
I was noticing the minor differences too.
