The first thing I would change is the number of miles on the odometer! It would look bitchin' with 5 spokes, especially magnesium!

Personally, I think it is too low. I would raise the back up so the rear wheel opening was about 1/2-1" above the tire and raise the front up however much that is. I would the reprime it and add full wheel covers. 55 Oldsmobile would be my pick. Not the Fiesta's. Then I would drive the wheels off it.

  4. I like fairly unmolested examples from that year.
Definitely change the wheels. Nothing says "Bye, Felicia" better than some alloys of your choice. Don't overthink new wheels. Keep the same size and offsets as what you have there.
The 'original' tail lights look s-l-o-w. HAMB member fourspd2quad (Dave) makes some high-quality, high-style ones that might be just the trick. (I like 'em.) ...........

Just a combination of ideas that I like. As most of you already know about me, I definitely like traditional, but I don't like driving someone else's idea of it. I haven't had a street car in officially 30 years....... I'm a drag racer, or was.

a local hot rod guy aways got his cars he bought pinstriped & had his name placed on the drivers door below the window like on the California Kid & his wifes on the pass door. There was always no doubt it was his had his name on it. to me nothing is easier to change than wheels & steering wheels & can make a huge change. your car is super cool but in my opinion since you asked needs some different wheels or at least some hub caps & rings. If it has slicks on the back I would put some regular tires on

  7. It's now yours. I know how you feel, decision, decisions, have fun with that sweet hot rod.

We're both in Michigan. You can't be that far away. I'd take care of everything. You wouldn't have to do a thing.
    Really appreciate the offer.

  10. I always start with the mechanics. Making it dependable is important to me. Then getting stance right with suspension and my choice of wheels and tires.

    Hello,
Having ridden in a fast A/Gas 34 Ford 5 window coupe that was one of the fastest cars in my brother’s older teenage group, it was impressive. Nice upholstery, rumbling motor and a cool lowered rake stance that separated it from all other hot rods at the time. I was saving for my first car and the two I thought were coming my way was my brother’s 51 Oldsmobile two door sedan and this black 34 Ford 5 window coupe. I knew those older teens always were on the look for the “next level” hot rod build, drag racer and cruiser.
    upload_2024-12-7_3-19-4.png
My brother sold his 51 Oldsmobile sedan and now, I was hearing rumors about the 34 Ford coupe being for sale.

First photo from the old internet. The 2nd/3rd were his coupe racing at Lion's Dragstrip.

I was a little short on cash saved and asked my mom for some help. She adored the teen that owned the 34 coupe as he was a regular at our house during those years. We all knew his family and history, so, I thought that was a key element in her adding to the coffers to buy the 34 coupe. Not so, as the situation played out. That noisy coupe rumbled as it parked in our driveway and she told me later that she did not particularly like the loud noise and she would never drive in it. So, that was that and our friend sold it to an out of city new owner.

So, two of my choices for my own first car went away with a flash of cash and now the future was puzzling. Although, within a year or so, I was the new owner of a Flathead 40 Ford Sedan Delivery for our surf adventures. Yes!

We have all gone through those stages of build or rebuild or modify what was purchased. Its history is just that. The new additions and modifications start a new outlook on hot rod adventures and that is how the future should look. Changes that you make for safety, comfort, accessories and even an A/C for the person sitting next to you on your road trips. It is a new car, new history and although you may want to leave the outside color, the changes made are now yours and the other history is gone.

Unless you just bought Jack Chrisman’s Model A sedan, painted it black, and put on S/S wheels, you won’t twist anyone’s neck or ideas if you wander in your own way. It is your car and your history. Now, on the other hand, if you leave it alone, then people will ask if you did the modifications. (a natural question when they see it parked somewhere) Or they will remember seeing the old car somewhere with its history.

So, make your changes, start your progress to show what you can do and how you are going to use it. Even if you have to take off the fenders, for a completely different look, at least it was your decision. But, unless you make some changes and continue as long as you feel it is right, then those are your choices and live with them.

    Note:

When my wife and I bought our 327 powered 40 Ford Sedan Delivery, we thought it was a turn the key and drive away down the road for our own adventures. But the 30 mile initial drive home made us think twice about any other planned road trips until we could make our own changes to the model and old build.

We did not care who built it, if it wasn’t what we needed or made the car run badly, then it got removed and replaced with a better system for safety as the first concern. Who cared who did the initial build, it was our purchase and our modifications that we had to live with for our future road trip reliability and safety.

upload_2024-12-7_3-23-55.png The semi finished 327 powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery visiting my mom’s house with a couple of young married 20 somethings smiling all the way to and from.

    Note2:

It was parked on the street during non, Jacaranda purple flower season in Long Beach. (deadly to all car paint…) And, we took our mom’s car to go shopping and to dinner. There was no room for a third person in the sedan delivery. No, our mom was not going to be the back seat driver… as there was no back seat. YRMV

When asked, and it did get asked, if we built the sedan delivery, we told them what we did to make it safe and handle 100% better than when we bought it. On the outside, it had the same paint, and we did make minor changes to the rims/hubcaps, but we did change some things to suit our own needs and no one else’s ideas.

I would put chrome reverse wheels and paint the car and fenders an eggplant or dark plum hue. Ford has a dark plum color on new cars now that is really cool looking. That's about it, looks good and stance is perfect already in my opinion

I like her just the way she is. She’s traditional. Just make her roadworthy, and drive the Hell out of the old gal.

  15. I'm with the rest, just make it yours by driving it and getting to know the sounds and feel of it.

However the easiest way to make significant change and easy, is new wheels and tires. Current setup looks good though. Can't go wrong with some straight 5 spokes however.

I can tell you if that car was in my driveway I'd be too busy driving it to worry about what to change about it.

I'm with the as is group... first thing I would do is detail the crap out of it...you can really get a love hate for a car detailing it.... while doing that... you figure what has to go and what gets to stay.. the new old now says keep it low... IMO it sits perfect if it drives good that way... and like said... keep the measurement of the wheels and tires to make sure you copy them...wash the heck out of that black and it will have a nice look to it

post some more pics if you can... dash motor ,and such

IMG_7384.jpeg Man it’s pretty cool as it sits. If I had it in my hands and some money to throw around…. I’d change the black steelies for 40-48 ford steelies, ditch the cowl lights and front bumper. Swap that shiny grill in for the painted one and down size to some hotrod headlights from those big stockers. Maybe some little kick stand pipes under the back end of the running boards? ( kick stand pipes meaning like 13” long versions of lakes pipes)

Dress the motor to my taste and put my stamp on the interior and let it buck.
