Censorship on the HAMB

My account has been deleted because of the username I chose - AssJelly. Following is a copy of my reply to Ryan Cochran. And the contents of a post I tried to make within the threads of my intro - to those that the username upset:

Ryan - I apologize for any offense my chosen username created. I would be grateful if you would take just a moment and listen to my reasons for choosing that name. I was trying to post this at the moment you deleted my account:

I apologize if my username makes any of you uncomfortable. Had you read my intro I think you'd see I'm a fairly respectible person.

Regardless of your viewpoints on morals or gays or what have you - I respect all of your viewpoints.

But having said that I chose the name because it's funny. And self depricating. Kind of like "Hokey Ass..." is in the name of this board. It makes fun of itself. And I didn't really make the connection between it and anal sex with a man. But that's kind of funny too.

The saddest thing though about your comments (and the username being deleted) is that you missed the entire idea behind hotrodding. Hodrodding wasn't started by people to conform. It was just the opposite - non-conformity with the social norm was the order of the day. People back then said the same things you guys just said but it was about guys who wore their hair to long - in DA's! Or rolled their cigerettes up in their t-shirt sleeves. And started clubs with names like Satan's Angels and other socially incorrect terms.

Now I don't think those guys were really Satan worshipers but they sure as hell weren't building hotrods to drive to church. Or to fit in with the rest of the limiting, claustraphobic, staunch society of that day.

But neither was it my intention to promote homosexuality in the use of that username. It was just funny to me.

So if I do show up to a HAMB event I'm going to go out of my way to introduce myself as AssJelly - just to see who laughs and who get's embarrassed 'cause their to uptight to understand what hotrodding really means."

If you still agree that that name is inappropriate. I will abide by your decision and create a new account. But I respectfully would suggest that you may be missing something here. And perhaps the reason so many auto clubs/shows are missing attendees/members from a younger crowd. I'm not even younger - I'm 40.

I thought that was a good name. Is it at the point that we are going to have to start getting the approval of the list to pick a certian name or even join. Bring ASS JELLY back

reminds me of a saying my father constantly told me during my youth, "to get respect you have to give respect".

 

I think it's kinda along the lines of not cussing in the title of a post. Both can be read on the main page.

Also, I thought it was one of the stupidest names on the HAMB.

I personally don’t give 2 hoots what you call your self, but some others might.
If your name is insulting to some one and they see it on the first page they look at their insulted. Another no no is swearing in the subject line.

The bottom line is it’s Ryan’s board if he says it’s not on, it’s not on FULL STOP.

Your name did not bother me one bit. I kind of thought it was funny in a dumb way. One thing you need to understand is this is Ryans shop. If he does not like it he doesn't have to deal with it. If someone I didn't know came into my shop and did or said something I found inapropriate I would be seeing you to the door and you would not be back. You are getting another chance, change your name try not to piss anyone off anymore than you are already doing and take advantage of it.
