I use Fusion 360, at this time, primarily for a Jeep accessory I designed. I started out with Blender (initially for some 3D graphic work), but found Fusion 360 was more amenable to CAD type work. I have a Bambu X1C printer, works great. As you probably already know, there are thousands of shared files you can download for free. There is some really nice work out there. I've used some free files and tweaked them for my purposes. Fun stuff! don
Did the group for this ever get created? I don't know how to find it. I've been learning Fusion 360 for a while now. Here's a horn button I designed and had printed in stainless, and a prototype A/C louver ball to replace the generic ones in a lot of aftermarket stuff.

Yes, the trouble is there are some restrictions to using the free software in as much as you do need a decent enough computer, an old lap top with a quad core cpu with 2 gb of ram and no real graphics ability for example will struggle to let you spin a detailed model on screen... I really wanted to learn it to drive a plasma table, 3-d Printer and a tradition cnc mill, So I went and bought a new 27 inch wide monitor, new soft touch keyboard and mouse, THEN nailed together a new computer, I am going to throw 'THIS' out there as I think its useful information...... Intel have 'just' this month brought a new socket size cpu - 'chip' to the market, these are socket 1851, lg array 1851 - -their designation isn't i5 -i7 i9 anymore, they are now called intel ULTRA 5 -7 and 9 note the CORE count is the same as the previous older style socket lga1700 cpu of the RAPTOR lake generation 14 chips previous versions of these on the lg array 1700 socket are gen 12 and gen 13 so gen 12, 13 and 14 intel cpu's fit the socket lga1700 mother boards gen 11 cpus fit lga1200 - so dont go there. buy a used i7 gen 14 raptor lake cpu - '14700' £250 buy a lga1700 itx mother board for ddr5 - z790 itx or b760i itx used £125 buy 64gb - two sticks of ddr5 ram - 4800 - 5200 new £125 - or get 2 used ddr5 stiocks at 32gb buy two 1t nvme ssd drives - MUST BE GEN 4 pcie £50 each buy a arctic freezer III 360mm cooler £75- new - it comes with the paste and a hold down frame - USE THE SINGLE NON RGB CONNECTOR - 1-wire buy a corsair sf850L psu power supply unit small form factor 'type 5' plugs used £90 buy a 2000d case corsair - or whatever you like ssf small form factor used black £75 - buy a radeon 6600 gpu £150 - any 3 fan card buy a new 27'' 100hz cheap monitor for £100 silent touch logi wireless keyboard and mouse £30 so 'GAMERS' are now upgrading their 'GAMING' computers to the newer stuff - and amd 3d cpus - NOT the WHOLE COMPOTATO - just the hardware - specifically the mother board and the cpu - -particularilly BECAUSE (BOTH) the amd cpu and Intel platform has just been 'changed' i.e. there will BE loads OF USED TECH FOR SALE - -JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET THE GENERATION 1 STEP BACKWARDS so there is 1 year old computer stuff for sale for cheap. what I am saying is, build yourself a new used computer this end of year with a 20 core cpu running @ 5.5, with 64gb of ram , with a modernish graphics card , and with 'even' a 100hz monitor @ 27'' you will be able to 'orbit' a massive on screen model and it not give you the hump. you can always go z890 for intel ultra 5 - 7 or 9 BUT a z890 itx mother board is £350 new an ultra 7 intel CPU is £400 'buzz' words are z790 itx 14700 14900 raptor lake lga1700 nvme solid state drives - they live on board, 1t 2t 4t - these have TO BE GENERATION 4 pci-e m.2 drives note a b760i itx board will have two bays for nvme's z690 itx boards will take 12th gen cpus and 13/14 - but its not worth the gyp as the ram slots changed from ddr4 to ddr5 z690 to z790, you can get both boards in ddr5 or 4 - its really confusing SO JUST GET A Z&() ITX BOARD for ddr5 and CHECK its for ddr5 BEFORE you buy the RAM whatever you do dont buy a gaming computer case - fish-bowl and disco lights. - the ITX or small form factor type cases with no glass or flashing lights are designed for the 'creator' types, I am not saying designers and that, but you get what I mean, get some ear covering headphones - especially if you are sitting in front of a new 27inch wide 100 hertz refreshing monitor, plus a comfy seat. yes, and down the line when you get into the cad cam and wonder where all your time went and why you have just bought a new computer and a new 3d printer and a mill or plasma table, DONt blame me.....
I have been using Solidworks Premium for the last decade. Fusion 360 is an excellent alternative for the hobbyist, but pay heed to what @nobby said. You need decent (not crazy-money, not top-of-the-line, just good) hardware. The key is not necessarily the fastest CPU, the most RAM, or the most storage, it is the GPU (graphics card). Of all the things in the system, you want to put the money there.
Not to hijack the thread but, you folks seem to be in the know. I have a CNC laser, homebuilt CNC torch table ( home made tools and equipment... ) and a CNC router. For ever I have been using AutoCad 97 LT to create 2D .dxf's to make G code from. It won't load on 64bit machines, the 8 or 16 bit installer doesn't help. I am looking for a simple 2D cad that I can actually use in less than a few hours. Most don't draw in the old format. I'm not SolidWorks privy. Seems to be emulated in most new softwares as I can't figure out how to use them worth a poop. I'm proficient in the classic AutoCad tools, lost in SolidWorks. I have a folder called "Junk CAD" with 7 or 8 that I have fooled with. You folks have a suggestion ? (free or cheap is a plus) Thanks, Mike
I used legacy Alibre but never got very good with it. When I set up the CNC mill with a Mach 3 box I used CamBam to generate the G code from Alibre although as I recall it is possible to draft in Cam Bam itself. There is a very generous trial period of 40 sessions and at the time it was priced a $150 for purchase.
I tried Fusion 360 briefly many years ago. Created a student account using one of my daughters ID. Had an iMac at the time. Watched this guy’s vids, which I thought were great. Created a 3D model of a screwdriver in about 30 minutes using one of his tutorials. Was supposed to use it to draw up a model of a friends “widget” as we’re supposed to become business partners, but the wife said no. So, that was the end of that. He later lost about CAN$300K trying to bring it to market and got fleeced by two design houses to create the model.
