    Hello,

When we were surfing at Dana Point’s various surf spots, we usually saw this kid from Laguna Beach. Sometimes, he was by himself and other times, one other friend was with him. They were beginner surfers and they were having a great time learning, falling, and enjoying the whole surfing scene. He had an unusual station wagon that no other teenage surfer had. It was a 1961 Dodge Lancer Station Wagon in a bluish color.
upload_2024-11-29_4-29-9.png Similar look, but with a funky slanted 6 cylinder motor. We all laughed at that. Even my Flathead motor was somewhat normal, but at least it was a V8. But a 6 cylinder and cocked over to the side? What a concept.

We got to be friends along this rocky shoreline and it was fun meeting new teens. He liked that we were better surfers than he was and gravitated towards where we surfed between the Doheny Beach break, around the tall cliff outcrop and along the rocky shoreline to Killer Dana Cove. It actually was a better surfing spot. Today it would be around the location of the bridge that goes over to the island.

This is a tribute to his being the only car of its kind for a 60s teenager we knew of at the time. One day, he showed up with two longboards on a roof rack. His confidence was getting better and his surfing skills were also smoother, the more he watched our moves and styling. Now, his Dodge Lancer was looking good and we said he might want to look for some Moon Discs for his station wagon.

A custom version of what the little station wagon could have looked like, to make sales go through the roof, instead of being left on second hand, used car lots for eternity…

We continued to see him every time we surfed the Killer Dana surf spot and the inside peak that hardly anyone could see. Those that did see the southerly peak from the Killer Dana parking lot, usually opted for the larger waves at the point. We liked the point waves, but with three guys out in head high waves consistently in smooth, glassy location, it was heaven in So Cal surfing… No one else was willing to walk along the very rocky shoreline or paddle some distance south of the Point.

He wanted to paint his Dodge Lancer a dark red. It would have looked like this version with early Halibrand Mag Wheels. Plus his Dodge Lancer had the electric roll down rear window to make transporting those large surfboards as simple as sliding them in the open rear window with the lower door closed. As long as he blocked off the opening left by the upraised window/surfboards was stuffed with air blocking t shirts or towels. No CO coming in the openings.

After we moved on to surfing Trestles farther down South in Camp Pendleton, we lost track of our teenage friend from Laguna Beach and this cool Dodge Lancer Station Wagon. We never knew if he finished his cool, unusual surf station wagon… Here is a custom two door Nomad style wagon for you and the old memories... YRMV

  6. Good Morning. Another very, very, oldie. I drew this in school after reading the Hot Rod, Street Rod, Crash club, and other books of Henry Gregor Felsen. 1096.jpg

    Happy FAS folks.
I'm guessing many of you, like me, are still wearing "stretchy pants" after consuming too much yesterday ;).

  11. There actually was a 2 door version of the Lancer wagon built for Western Electric that was a sedan delivery. I saw 5 of them in a junkyard in Ann Arbor MI in 1968. Tried to buy one but no deal.
