I have a 1960 dodge wagon with a 318 poly. At some time it has been fitted with a 4 speed box from a dodge truck . Is there another manual box that is an easy swap
I'm not sure what bell housing you have but any of the 3 & 4 speeds from that era and beyond that were used behind an LA series small block will work with the appropriate bell housing. You'll also be faced with a change to your driveshaft (length and yoke).
Its likely that the bell you have only has the truck transmission bolt pattern on it, if it has a 2nd pattern, you should be able to see a few of the bolt holes around your existing trans. The clutch disc hub will match the transmission input shaft, so that too will be different. The bell housing bolt pattern on the back of the poly motor is the same as any small block Mopar motor. The truck flywheel (and bell) may be a larger diameter then one from a car (depending on which truck the trans came out of) simply because it is a truck trans. The flywheel is a neutral balanced that will come from any small block Mopar except a 360/5.9, they have a different balance. I suggest you get the flywheel (and clutch) that matches the bell and the transmission you get. The truck trans should have the shifter coming out of the top of the trans, unless you go with one of the modern 5 speeds OD transmissions (which also have the shifter coming out of the top of the trans), you may have to alter the hole in your floor pan, and you may need to modify the trans tunnel to clear the shifter and its linkage that bolts onto the driver side of the transmission.
But I think your 1960 318 had the extended crankshaft, meaning you would have to swap in a newer crank to use the newer stick stuff.
Correct concerning the extended crank, things we forget about. But, at the same time, we have no idea what year anything on the car was built in. All we know it that the car is a 1960 Dodge wagon and that the motor is a 318 poly. As a case in point, I had a 66 Dodge 3/4 ton pickup with a 318 poly and the truck 4 speed, would have been a pretty easy swap into a 60 Dodge wagon.
I put a 1994 Dakota 5 speed behind a early dodge hemi Using a Torque flite adapter and changing the ring gear to a dakota ring gear on the stock flywheel. You will lose the E brake.
All Hemi, hemi based Polys & "A" Polys through '61 have the same bell & crankflange and the trannys interchange, or..get a 392 to '62 & up adaptor & put a modern sb 727 or stick tranny behind it.
^^^^^^what George said. If you want a 4-spd then it will be an A-833. Match the trans, bellhousing and flywheel. The 3+1 OD uses the 143 tooth flywheel and it does not fit in a 130T bell. If you want a 5-spd then it will be the AX15. This will use the 143 tooth flywheel. There is also the Getrag 6-speed.... Details on my website.
