  8. Is that not the reason for a hot rod or custom?

That 1955 Chevy RV is kind of neat, but something about it says AI to me.

  10. Absolutely Not! AI on the H.A.M.B. is a violation of or rules. We are strictly period correct hot rods only! I don't remember exactly but our Cut Off date is 1965 or maybe 1968. At any rate AI didn't exist back then so that will not be tolerated!:confused::eek:o_O

    Hello,

The boxed in area is/was once a Merle’s drive-in restaurant location when we were teenagers and earlier. It was the last one on the coastal drive south to the San Diego county coastal locations. As for the popularity, the easter week or spring break activities were always centered on cruising Merle’s drive-in restaurant. It had a somewhat circular roadway surrounding the whole restaurant complex.

As teenagers packed the parking lot, the main cruising pathway was behind the cars parked at the sidewalk. But the best parked location for car hop service was the spots facing the driving lane in front. Then two rows were able to face in the same direction. Finally an entrance/exit pathway was behind the second row of cars. The last row was on a slight hill, uphill from the front row of old hot rods and cruisers. Everyone saw the line up of cars come parading through the front pathway and that was the road “to be seen.”
upload_2024-12-15_2-42-28.png Similar wide rear openings as the Suburbans of the time period. It was the same chassis and body style for the panel vans and Suburbans with side windows.

Had it been back in the early 60s, the panel van would have easily taken our longboards inside while we traveled to our South of the Border surf journeys. Plus, privacy in full length sleeping bags and not crimped up in a standard sedan delivery size.

Obviously, the owner was an out of state traveler with ties to the coastal area of So Cal. It was there on the street for several days and by the next time we drove by the close Fashion Island shopping center, the panel van was gone. Either back to Montana or sold to a So Cal local. I wish I was able to snap some pics, but there is an old timer junker in the north side of Holland who had two or three of these late 40s Ford Rangers.

  15. Who doesn't love these?? And so few and far between nowadays. Spotted this picture on the wall of our Winter Park Fire Department, while there this week. Seems perfect to share. Don't remember ever seeing a long one like this. Picture circa early 70's??
