I have not been working on much Hot Rod stuff in the last couple years but I have been working on this 1945 Willys MB. So, in honor of Pearl Harbor Day I thought I would post a picture of the little Jeep affectionately known as “Sweet Cheese.” Thanks to all that serve and have served in the past!
We shall never forget those died and those who have served in any war, conflict, or police action the United States of America has been invoked in. God Bless them all.
Yes......let's stop to remember all the men and women who have died defending our country, our way of life and hopes of future generations. Days like this must also remind us to be vigilant of all that is going on around us in this world.
Sorry for the hijack......I LOVE your MB Willys. It has absolutely the perfect look and condition. I would love to hear the story behind it. I too have given up on several of my hot rod projects and several have gone on to people who will do right by them. Being 78yrs old and battling advanced prostate cancer certainly does not help with energy and focus for projects. My remaining "project" is my 1953 Willys CJ3B. It is an original Oregon Forestry Service vehicle. Our one and only 5yr old grandson loves some short putt putt trips out of the subdivision and down to lake. He loves sitting on the flat fender and pointing to stuff in the engine compartment and then I explain what it is. P***ing on the internal combustion addiction to the next generation.
Speaking about remembering Pearl Harbor.......I was in a meeting at our Church this last week. There were 6 people in the discussion/training session about communication skills. To tell my story, I brought up some of my experiences being in the Navy in the late 1960's early 1970's. I was never on the ground in Viet Nam, but one of my brothers and some friends were. I was stateside at the Naval Air Station in Pensecola. This is the second time I have been in discussions with middle aged intelligent people and I mention something about the Viet Nam war and what our country was like with the deep divisions between anti-war and the thousands of soldiers who enlisted, served, saw battle and in many instances gave their life. It is gut-wrenching to immediately have questions from people that amount to some form of .......What was the Viet Nam war ?....I have never heard of it......tell us more about it "!!!!!!! If we don't learn from history, we are bound to repeat it.
I lost an uncle who was on a submarine that was sunk shortly after Pearl Harbor. I was very blessed to be able to take my elderly mother, my wife and two young daughters to visit Pearl Harbor over 26 years ago. We were able to read an inscription of many who were lost that included my uncle's name. It really left an impression on our daughters and I hope gives them some perspective on all that unfortunately continues to happen in our world today.
Thanks! I’ve actually been meaning to start a thread about its resurrection since we have this Antiquated forum now. I’ve just been lazy. I still have hot rod projects but have many varied interests so I’m all over the place! I’ve always been a fan of these little flat fenders growing up, watching M*A*S*H and rat patrol and the like so I started a hunt for one and found this one in pieces up In Nebraska. It had a stuck F head motor in it, but axles/ transfer case/ transmission were all original. It had some 14 inch tires and wheels on it that looked like they were from the 60s! The guy I got it from did not know much about it. I think he just bought it to flip it? It’s actually super solid and still has a bunch of olive drab paint on the underside and inside the tub. Somebody stripped the outside at some point and filled some holes and cut some holes so I’ve been slowly putting the military back onto it! I got a motor out of a ‘49 Willy’s wagon and found some rods and new pistons and slapped it back together and it seems to run pretty good! Still a lot left to do, but for the most part, it’s done and aesthetically will stay the way it is. Your 3B and grandson sound awesome!
My Uncle Jack, a Navy pilot and my Dad's brother, was killed Dec.7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor. 11 years later, I was born...and named after him. In a strange turn of events, my Dad sadly p***ed away 50 years to the day that Uncle Jack died, Dec. 7, 1991.
Something that is very sad is the fact that schools teach very little American history. Kids learn a day or two about the civil war, WW2 little to nothing about Korea and Vietnam. I wouldn’t doubt that that there are young adults who don’t know what Pearl Harbor day is about.
Here's a video of my History Teacher... Mr. William Weckel; what he taught, he made interesting and fun. Mr. William J. Weckel Memorial Video
On Dec 7th I always ask those I meet if they know what happened on this day in 1941, I remind my children and grand children and always say something about the day and what happened. It is sad to find so may dont know or care. Another is November 22, 1963. Neither get much coverage any more. My dad and uncle were both WW2 veterans. Most are gone now. We can never forget those who fought and died and all who suffered. tractorguy I was stationed at NAS Whiting Field north of NAS Pensacola in 1970
Our oldest grandson Tyler gave us our first great grandson on December 7, 2024 ..Sabastion…. A date that will be easy for me…
