    Howza Bruthas-

I recently saw on the Sitting and Rotting thread, a pic of a 1960 Dodge Matador four door hardtop. The more I looked, the worse it got. Now as an Edsel fan, I KNOW, some shade will be thrown at that car, but, what other designs can you just can not stand?

I'll start- the 1962 Plymouth Valiant.

Ugly cars can grow on you. I used to stand on top of early 60s Mopars in junkyards, looking off in the distance at what else they had. The glory days of awesome junkyards. Now I'd like to have damn near any 62 Mopar, 2 door, 4 door, don't care. Used to drive past a 4 door '62 Plymouth for sale every day. Years ago. First I laughed at it, then I looked forward to seeing it. Shitty pale green, button hubcaps, probably a no option car. When I decided I wanted it, it was gone. Never forgiven myself.

37 Fords were scorned in the late sixties, early seventies.

I loved the 57 Fords and hated the 58s. Now I’d take either.

Hated the batwing 59 Chevy for a long time. Passed on a 59 black /red interior convertible that was in a frontal accident but otherwise pristine because they were uglier than sin. I still remember it almost sixty years later, and still kick myself.

Funny, but I always liked those 62 Plymouth and Dodges though. Must have been out of pity.

When I was at the age of 10, this was simply hideous.
    Now, it is beautiful.

Ugly lies in the eyes of the beholder. No matter what hideous car I mentioned, there will be somebody who loves it and and will defend it like a ghetto mom defends her juvenile delinquent son.

Can't you see it? Heavy chop, get rid of the side dip, smooth out that crease below the dip... you've almost got a shoebox Ford that was customized. You have to admit, the cat's eye windshield makes a statement, what I don't know

Avanti related - Alice Cooper had his '63 redone
Much improved stance, in my opinion.

I'm in the love 'em category. The original ones, not the post Studebaker versions with the square headlights. But they definitely need a Chevy engine. That Studebaker boat anchor was outdated the first day it was available...

I call my white 340 powered '62 Lancer 4dr an Ugly Duckling but I and quite a few others think it is turning into a Swan!

  16. I don't know, I think there are cars that can stand some improvement and look a lot better with some creative customizing, even the lowly 1962 Plymouth Valiant can be improved on.

Then again you could trade the Valiant in on it's big brother the Savoy and save the money you were going to spend customizing the Valiant.

These '63 Dodge 880's! It's like someone crammed a Coronet grille on a 300! I'm actually trying to like them, and if you gave me one, running.... I'd drive it. xhn7r4wod5vd1.jpeg

I have a personal and deep-seated dislike for the 1964 Mercury Montclair 4dr with the "breezeway" rear window.
    Yuck. It's ugly!
"But why all the hate, Rick?"
    Cuz...
At 15 I had bought a running 1938 Chevrolet 4dr sedan. Planned on driving it to school, work on it in auto shop class, haul friends around, paint it up at homecoming... you know.
My mother was strict, but I didn't expect this. At some point while I was taking my driver's training, she announced... "No child of mine is going to be driving a car at 16! Not before you're 18!"
    Well wtf now?
    The Chevy got sold.
Not long after, my parents insisted that I buy my dad's friend's Mercury so that I could get myself to my great new summertime drafting job.
Mom - "You're not going to be hanging around this house all summer!"
Dad - "It's a good car, Rick. Mr. Pawloski maintained it well."

    @%#&* wonderful.

So I couldn't drive the old Chevy to school but I could drive the Mercury to work? o_O

And during school months, instead of working on the Chevy in auto shop class, I got to work on the Mercury.
    So fkn cool.

    Here's a fine example.
    Such "beauty". Such "grace".
    And the "warm memories".
    Sigh...

    1939 Ford trucks:eek:.

As a matter of fact, I hated the grille on my '39 so much that I modified the front sheet metal and used a '36 pickup grille.

  24. I looked up the word "ugly" in the dictionary and I swear to God it had a picture of a Nash.
The fine print said, "All of them, every year".

I didn't include any photos because I found out that I would have to download it to my computer in order to share it. Not doing that!

Early 50’s mopars are ugly in my opinion… And it’s not because anything in particular is ugly about them, like the Edsel’s grill. It’s the complete lack of ambition and aversion to risk that was clearly a part of the design process- like they took the worst design elements of the period and morphed them into an uninspiring, sexless contraption devoid of any personality.
    IMG_6340.png

It’s about as exciting as anything called a “cranbrook” ought to be I guess…

I wouldn't say these are ugly but they sure are an odd mashup.
