I need help from someone who knows what exactly belongs in a 32 Ford 5-window coupe door to hold the window channel in place. I'm attaching a couple pictures of the channel that has been cut off. I'm assuming this was done when the top was chopped 4" (prior to me purchasing the body). As a note; I purchased this car from a H.A.M.B. contributor (Ralph Miller in Houston), 2 years ago and sadly Ralph has passed away. I just need to know if these channels originally extended all the way up the inside front of the door to hold the felt channels? Hopefully the pictures will show enough to understand what I'm asking. I appreciate your feedback and help with this.
You need the rubber/felt channel that goes in the metal channel to guide the glass. the metal channel is only inside the door like you have. The garnish trim and the outer door skin hold the rest of the felt channel put the garnish molding on and it will make sense
OK, that's what I needed to know. I wasn't sure if the metal channel needed to go all the way up. Thank you!!
Maybe not the way you are planning to go but if you get a complete kit, eg Vintique, it should all make sense. Chris
I used the Vintique kit on both of my 32-5 windows, the first one a Deuce Customs (Aussie) glass car and the second one a Upac steel body. For the Upac build I purchased a length (6 foot) of the "fuzzy" stuff and glued it to the garnish mold. Haven't glued any to the door yet, bit tricky with it all together and should have done it before the glass went in.
Thank you for the responses. I will look into the Vintique kit and compare with the felt strip I have already purchased. It seems I still need to weld/attach that "cut off" (piece showing in my pictures), so it's not just flopping around in there. Thanks again everyone!!
As said by @65standard they support the felt at the front, mine stop about 1/2” below the surface marked. Do you have the rear channels that support that felt? They are repro’ed by United Pacific. The rectangular cutout supports the felts at the door latches.
To Fordors; yes I have the rear channels in place. When you say yours ends 1/2" below the horizontal metal where the wood is enclosed, is yours attached to the door at that area or loose like mine? It seems they need to be attached. I'm suspecting mine were cut when the doors were cut 4" and never reattached. Just curious! Also to choptop4; it would be great if you had the time to stop by sometime. It sounds like you are familiar with the 32 doors. I don't expect a special trip to look at them, but if it is ever "convenient" because you are in the area I would appreciate it. I'm located about 3 blocks from the Safeway at Green Valley Rd. and Francisco Drive. I don't always look at my e-mail so feel free to text me at 916-996-4296 if in the area. I'm retired so I'm home most of the time. Thank you again to everyone for responding.
I don’t want to high jack your thread cmusser but do you mind if I ask a 3 W question on your thread? is a 32 3 window the same? I didn’t take my 3 W apart and this is my first 32 project. I have wondered the same questions you are asking about you 5 W. If the 3 W is different I’ll start a new thread. Thanks in advance Greg
Chief 64; no problem on the high jacking concern. We are all in this together. I hope you get the answer you need. This site and subscribers are so helpful. Good luck!
@Chief 64 I don't think that I still have the box that my parts came in but I'm pretty sure they were for the 5 window and sedan only. Maybe the 3 window is different as they do differ from the 5 window in other areas. Check with your local hot rod shop to see if they carry a kit for the 32-3 window.
here you can see the steel channel spot welded in place and it end about 1/2” below the wooden structure for the garnish trim. There are T-slots just above and below the steel channel where the felt clips into.
