I am moving the battery in my 50 Chevy to the trunk and have a couple of questions. I was thinking about using an old metal picnic cooler to store the battery in. If I get a big enough one I was thinking about also storing some basic tools & stuff in it. Will I have any issues with venting any battery fumes ? I thought about setting a marine type of box in the cooler as well. Is this a better or worse idea? Could I just drill a few holes in the back of the cooler for venting & leave it at that? Thanks, Steve
What type of battery are you going to use? If you use a dry cell like an Optima you don't have to vent it and you can mount it upsidedown if you want.
I dont think I use a metal box with tools in it. You'll have to back sure the battery is held down dont want it or your tools to be bouncing around and possable metal contack to the battery. ZAPPPPP I would not do it. Why do you want to do it???
We used a kit from Summit to relocate the battery on Dad's '53. It includes everything you need and the battery box is big enough to have a little dry storage area.
The cheap and easy solution - Go to a marine supply store and get the battery box with the built in hold down strap threaded through the cover. Bolt the strap ends to the floor of your trunk. Box is vented and will be OK in the trunk. The best solution - use an Optima battery and stick it anywhere, I'd never use anything else.
