Projects WTB: 55 pontiac manual transmission

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by Michael L Morrison, Dec 12, 2024.

  1. I'm trying to rebuild a 55 pontiac manual transmission. All things considered it might be better to buy another on that works or has enough usable parts to consolidate into one transmission.

Who has a transmission or parts for my 55 pontiac

As is often said, a picture would be beneficial. I think that it may be the same as a 5,6 or 7 Chevy but I'm not sure. I'm going to check my Hollander.

I looked them up and they appear to be different, as well as the internals.

he needs 7 more posts until the wanted section of the cl***ifieds is available to him. I looked it up in Hollanders and 55 Trans are all by themself. but it did say that 49-54 Pont trans fits if you change the output shaft and rear ext housing

  6. Sorry to have violated standards. Pull it down if it's bad.

My understanding is that the 53 54 will work with mods too.

May end up having to go this route if a 55 transmission is not available.

Still going to try to find a 55 manual transmission first

Thanks for any and all help.

From my memory, the early 50s insides are the same - input shaft is longer on '55-'56.

Arn't they the same as Olds and small Buick's internals, just the case is different. It's a selector transmission IIRC.

Hollander interchange number for 55 Pontiac is 491

The interchange section shows 491 fits 55 Pontiac only. But lists that #375 fits by changing the output shaft and extension housing

  10. I think on something that year specific id convert to a more common equivalent transmission unless doing a ******** stock resto. Make down the road easier if something happens to the trans again. Even on a stock resto I don't see anyone crawling under it and freaking out if it has a 56 trans

In '56, standard shift Pontiacs got the beefier selector three speed that the Oldsmobiles of the time used. I believe that two of the four mounting holes are the same as the smaller '55 transmission. It wasn't until 1958 that Pontiac went to the common Chevrolet style standard transmission.
