What is it with boys and 55 Chevy sedans?

    Hello,

I found a photo of my wife’s younger brother trying to get inside of the family 1955 Chevy sedan. They were living in Manhattan Beach at the time and for a couple of years, seemed like a permanent home. So Cal, beach community, close to schools, dad’s job and a cool downtown area that still rings true to this day. It is and still is a So Cal community that draws tons of visitors daily and is close to the LAX airport.

It was 1955 and they had just purchased their new Chevy sedan. By late 1955, they had taken off to go back to OKC and another job for the dad. Now, at least in OKC, they would be near relatives and other immediate family. But, the bad thing was, the kids all had to be in different school grades in Manhattan Beach, then in 1955, entered school before Christmas in different schools. It was not the best time to enroll in school, but the new job called...

We know about boys and cars as little kids. We loved playing in our cousins’ 49 Chevy sedan because it had a weird stick shift with an extra pedal. Then in our dad’s Buick sedans with one lever and only the brake pedal. So, the appeal is there.

But the odd thing for my wife and sister/brother was that they were in two different schools in elementary school in 1955-56. By the middle of the fall school year of 1956, they had moved back out West to a house near Knotts Berry Farm because a new job opened up and their dad took it with a raise in salary. Now, the kids were in a new school in Manhattan Beach So Cal, then OKC and now, schools in Buena Park, So Cal. What an upending life style…

The kids adapted well to the 55 Chevy as it was their main source of play, as a back and forth timeline to the OKC area and back to So Cal, several times in one year… YRMV…

    Note:

So, what does the teenager kid buy for his hot rod daily driver before joining the Army? A 396 SS green with white striped OT Camaro with a 4 speed and power to back up the look… it was fast…

  29. I know progress is important but this makes me cry. In regard to how we live now you have to wonder is it worth it sometimes.
