I've been playing with a fenderless 28 RPU for some time. i got a complete 49ish F1 axle with all new drums, brakes etc. just letting my mind wander about best way to use the whole thing. found one guys solution, but i already have a speedway 31" spring and i think it's too long for this type of mount. anyone have some other ideas? pics? thanks, mike.
Do you want pretty or cheap? You could use those nice brakes on some 37-48 passenger spindles on a 30’s passenger I-beam.
I just knew you guys were gonna say that. it's also my understanding that i can mount F1 kingpins, spindles and drums directly to an A axle. is that correct?
I used everything from the spindles out on an after market dropped model a axle. I can't remember if I used the model a king pins or the F1s. Phil
I guess I'm missing something? As pointed out; Too many good aftermarkets, and other car* stock alxes ,that fit prefect n look n work great. Then to play with a clunker truck axle, with brackets added. IMHO. Drop if needed, can even be done with late 40s Ford car*=that have 3inch stock drop.
Don't ask if you know your not going to like the honest replies. I understand about try to build on a budget but the F1 axle under a T-bucket sounds like a rodent rod. HRP
A big part of these cars that we like are the the stripped down and svelte aesthetic aspect of them. Putting a big clunky truck axle on a tiny car could work from a functional stand point but you would completely sacrifice the form side of the spectrum. Another vote for using the brakes on the earlier transverse spring designed axle
Yes you can use f-1 spindles on a model a axel. You will most likely have to heat and bend the steering assembly a bit.
Just put the great rebuilt F1 hubs and brakes and steering box if you have one on a regular dropped I beam .there is nothing pretty about an F1 axle.. My input anyway.
I used one on my champ car. NARROWED 6 INCHES REMOVED THE SPRING PADS DRILLED IT SMOOTHED IT ADDED HAIRPIN BATWINGS Beg to differ, but I think it looks OK, even on a tiny car. Also, the F1 steering boxes (Gemmer) make a great upgrade to a Model A box.
F-1 brakes, trimmed F-1 spindles, aftermarket bolt on steering arms, and a dropped A axle make a decent looking hot rod front end. Right width and it doesn't look rat roddy.
So, is it correct that if you trim the arms off some F1 spindles that they are dimensionally the same as 48 passenger car except for the spud?
This little T modified showed up at the Run to Roslyn back in 2005 with a parallel leaf axle and quarter elliptic springs with Ford Wishbones keeping things in place. That may be a mid 30's / 54 Chevy truck axle as the spring centers are too close together to be Ford.
They kingpin is at the same angle; but the snout only work with F-1/F-100 brakes*. With the ugly trimmed off and fitted with aftermarket arms they look OK. I've also seen them with looping drag link arm cut of off leaving the tie rod eye and used with a slingshot arm for side steer. If you have the spindles and F series brake it is an alternative; but I would rather use early spindles with integral steering arms. *Disc brake kit for the same F-series truck will work.
