Yup Warrensburg native. And even smaller world we're building the same platform car even if mines a 53 lol
Any odd parts you're needing? Over the years I've had a couple guys donate surplus parts to my hoard to help me along and I now have a lot of oddball parts lol
Well, I am looking for a 51 buick waterfall grille (the one that goes over the bumper too), and I think 54 caddy bullets and bumper corners. I was thinking of combining them, and then I saw someone already did that, and I like the look. Rear fender skirts too some day as well
@Masterclu I always find it funny when everybody tells you how to build your car. I like where you're going. keep at it.
Very cool! @Austin kays sent me some shots the other day and it really had a great line going. I can still remember taping those flames off in my driveway haha. Love to see this project coming to life.
I should mention part of why I mentioned being so close is I'm not against donating time to fellow members to help with a build. So if you ever need an extra wrench or pick and dolly wielder lemme know
I think the full Buick taillight would be overbearing, but what if you trim off the lower part under the round reflector area at the backup light opening and used just the top half. I think that would be a cool look and something different yet similar to a 56 Packard or 55 Plymouth. Just my two cents. Glad to see a cut and slice custom project on here again. Keep the updates coming. Larry
well, harvest is over, so Im done with farming for a bit. So now the 49 is finally getting the attention she deserves. I have started welding the pillars back in the car, and have started patching the roof. I picked up an English Wheel from Northern Tool and started forming the patch panels to fill in where I cut the roof back in July. There is a ton of work left to do, including fixing a mistake in the roof at the top, which I have a plan on how to fix by shrinking the steel in that area. I'm hoping to be able to get a lot of the work on the roof done in the coming weeks. In the mean time, here are some pictures for your enjoyment.
once again, please don't put those 56 Buick tail lights on your car, if you used Cad fishtail taillights that would look much better than 56 Buicks. Guidance is guidance, take or leave it, but - just wrong, others please comment to help this design go away.
The chop is great, proceed without the 56 Buick taillights, use some cardboard and masking tape to fare the buick taillight into the car and stand back and look at it, just doesn't work, end of guidance.
Remember this is his car he is building it for his taste not yours or mine. Personally, I don't like chopped cars. I love the East Coast style channeled no chop but if someone wants to build a Hi-Boy with a chop it's their car not mine. Now if someone asked me about building a chopped car, I would tell them to sit in one maybe ride or drive one before pulling the trigger, make sure they are comfortable, can see etc... But it isn't my place to talk someone out of what they want to build.
Id assume if he did the tail lights he'd use the matching bumper that he also has. Which means the tails would sit much lower than that
How would they sit lower? They sit above the bumper on the stock car as well. You going to put the bumper lower than the car? I am with John they are ridiculously oversized for the back of that car. The whole look of a fleetline is everything tapers down to the back. You chop a car to make it even more streamline. To put those monstrosities on there would completely fight that whole thing.
In this pic they sit at least an inch or two below the bumper. And as the bottom section is "dead" area anyway no reason he couldn't put them lower in the bumper
I think the taillights in question are going to look awesome. Creating a custom should be about thinking outside of the box and just maybe doing something that hasn’t been done before. On my own cars I would never post what I was planning on doing to them cause half the people would say I was making a mistake and I just don’t care what they think and neither should you.
I'd rock those taillights. Funny how when you tell somebody your plans, they tell you how you're ruining the car, because they wouldn't have the balls to make a modification that hasn't been done to death. Hell, they wouldn't even consider building that car anyway. It's the same guys who think every Deuce roadster needs to be stock bodied & red, or black. Every deuce coupe needs to be yellow w/ a chop & a Man-A-Free intake. And every '58 Impala needs to be white w/ red scallops. I've had several people tell me what I was planning was stupid, and most really loved the finished product. They just don't have the vision. And I love chopped tops. Cut that thing up.
Keep up the great work! I will be following this build. I have my opinions in the tail lights but follow your vision and build it your way.
It’s only metal . Fab it up if you’re not happy with it cut it off and start over . It’s your ride , your vision
I appreciate the input, and your passion. Maybe it won't work, maybe it will. Time will tell, that's what mock up is for. I will mock it up before I commit to welding them in permanently. If it doesn't work, no big deal. I bought that buick rear end because it was stupid cheap, and has good usable parts on it. I will be deleting the filler panel between the bumper and the trunk area and installing the buick bumper in place of the factory one anyway. Bottom line though man, if I like the way it looks after mock up, I'm going to do the fins and lights. At the end of the day, I'm building this car for me, not anyone else.
Hey @Masterclu You might want to take a look at the very cool tail lights of the 55 to 58 Packard Clippers. Just food for thought and nothing more, but they are very cool! Thanks from Dennis.
