Hot Rods If you could pick a car that epitomizes the word "Hot Rod" what one car fits that bill?

  10. From The Richard V. Munz Collection
being offered at no reserve in January at
    The Mecum Kissimmee Auction

For me - this is the definitive Hot Rod
with a story no one would believe …

A Pre WW2 classic hot rod inspired by
a bronze sculpture of a fictitious car
that existed in the mind of an artist.

Richard fell in love with the sculpture and bought it, and then set out to build a car
down to the minor detail of the one in the sculpture …

    IMG_4189.jpeg

Both the sculpture and the car will be offered at the auction in January - I was honored to
visit The Munz Collection in November
of 2013 when I picked up The Coleman Coupe
for my customer who hired me to transport it.

I spent most of the day in the building and was allowed to photograph the collection and these images are from my visit that day …

    IMG_3635.jpeg

    IMG_3637.jpeg

Richard personified the process of the art that is manifested in a hot rod that begins in the mind of the builder who is an artist and creates the hot rod that runs and drives.

No one else to my knowledge has built a
hot rod based on a random sculpture they
fell in love with - for that reason this is
    the Definitive Hot Rod Dream.

If you watch this video - the story of this
car is at the 5:00 minute mark …

Piero's Tweedy Pie recreation has some very similar design cues
a grill and header swap and it's almost there

    Hello,

A “hot rod” simple definition for a lot of folks is a fenderless open roadster of any kind. Out for a cruise around the neighborhood or on a long road trip with the dinky trunk area packed with “stuff.” So, to satisfy our “open roadster” format, this old T-Bucket roadster was our choice.

A long time ago, I was introduced to this very low slung T-Bucket roadster in San Diego. The owner was one of the original “San Diego Prowlers.” He was a wealth of knowledge and he was not one of those guys that is “up there,” after getting accolades for his cool T-Bucket roadster. He was willing to share his information to my wife and me with a friendly, no-nonsense way that allowed us to feel as if we were riding in the roadster.

While he was talking, my wife and I were taking notes. This roadster was going to be in a magazine and we had to have all of the pertinent facts. The Ford motor build, the chassis, and soon to be added, a disc brake front system to halt the lightweight roadster from freeway speeds to slowing down with ease. And the specifics of the accessories to make it comfortable as possible in the tight quarters.

Fred Castro fit in the roadster very tightly and the custom steering wheel was added to make egress and ingress easier for anyone. I was invited to go for a ride around the block and getting in on the other side left little room for full roadster comfort. When we got going down the street, it was like sitting on a roller skate with the road whizzing by as if I could touch the ground as we went down the street.

One of the nicest things was the no muffler appearance. The 8 individual chrome pipes were baffled, to lower the sound and not stop performance. My ears will attest to the fact that we could talk freely while cruising down the road, and not raising our voices to be heard. The sound of the wind blowing by was typical open roadster fashion, as expected, but two big guys sitting in the tight fitting T-roadster probably looked comical. YRMV
