We have a nice 272 y block ford due for a rebuild. We have a mint set of .060 pistons that need new rings . Egge do rings for their own pistons but they are the wrong width for an original style 272 pistons. Really struggling to find any rings. Top and 2nd ring 3/32. And oil is 3/16 wide
Some places say .060 , but don’t specify in stock or available. They want you hit the buy now , then tell them what size you need, and trust you get a refund when they don’t have what you want. Strange system.
The 223 six uses the same rings, only six pistons worth of course. They seem to be impossible to find, too, unfortunately.
The Hastings part number for .060 272 pistons is 564060, some might come up on ebay if you have time to hunt. You can also get ring spacers to run thinner rings in wider ring lands that might allow you to run the 5/64 thick rings in your current pistons. If you go with that option, look at Chrysler 273 rings, they are the same bore size as 272 Ford but are 5/64 width.
Can you share where one might affordably source those spacers? I once asked Total Seal and they said, "Sure; we can make anything you want. Spacers are $28 each. jack vines
Years ago any well equipped machine shop would offer a service known as a "G.I." (groove insert) for pistons. It was usually done to save used pistons that had worn ring grooves. Or when a racer wanted to fit a set of custom rings to his existing pistons. It usually involved cutting the ring grooves slightly wider and then installing the groove insert of the proper thickness to use with the new rings. The insert fit snugly against the bottom of the ring land and didn't extend beyond the outside diameter of the piston. Of course they also used to knurl piston skirts too.
Look here. https://hastingspistonrings.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/diametrical.pdf You can build ring sets from singles. I think all ring manufacturers have listings like this. Hard to find now. The ones I used were on paper. Mike
We still have the grooving kit, but the replacement spacers haven't been available for thirty years. We also still have a piston knurling machine; we knurl a set maybe twice a year where replacements are NLA. jack vines
Absolutely. Working with stock parts is always the best. As a point 292’s have .020, .030, .040, and .060 but .050 is a stock 312… 272’s are a great block. Contract Ted Eaton of Eaton Balancing in Leona Texas or Tim McMaster in Hanford California and ask one of them what your options are….These 2 both will not steer you wrong..
Probably worth an email to either Ted Eaton or Tim Mc Masters. If anyone would know, they would. https://www.eatonbalancing.com/2001/03/20/contact-us/ http://yblockguy.com/ edit. Jimmy types faster than I do.
This is place I saw yesterday, they say $4 ea up to 5" bore but I don't know any more than that. https://www.ringspacers.com/ringspac.htm
