Do you guys want to see another Model A buildup

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Curly, Oct 22, 2006.

  1. I've started a project and I going to be cutting metal soon. Would you guys be interested in another Model A buildup series? This will be a groundup deal with pics and what a mere mortal can do with an average amount of funds and knowledge and working 40+ hours a week at a non-car job.

I was thinking of updating once a week with pics and any info I used to help me get to where I am on the build. Such as resources, parts suppliers, fixtures, methods, calculators and sketches/drawings.

  2. Mate, go for it! It is always good to see build up & How to posts.
    Cheers
    Jimmy

The more building type posts, the less room for drama type posts. Which reminds me, I my do the same thing with the T coupe I just started.

    Please do Curly.....
As a non car related industry worker myself, sites like the HAMB are my resource material, my 'ideas centre' for new projects.
    Go for It!!

    Good luck with it :)

Please do! If you can find time to document it, I can certainly find time to enjoy the fruit of your labor. Good luck. Can't wait for your posting.

Wheres your first pic???? I'm waiting.

  25. Hey Curly,
...3 days and counting....I guess we have to wait another 4 days to make it a week for your next progress report :D !
Can't wait for the rest....body style, type of frame....give it to us, please.

  26. of course let us know what parts you need as you go we have had alliance members already save more then $100 an order.

  27. OK OK today was the first day I've had off in a while. They called me back in to work but I wasn't home to answer the phone. I'm a RN in an ER and I'll try to complete this project without visting my co-workers in my off time:D

Details>>>>1928 Model A closed cab truck with a shortened (42" long) model A bed. I've decided on going with a triangulated 4 bar suspension. I 've played with a very addicting suspension calculator every waking moment.....this thing is as addictive as the HAMB itself. RelicStew sent it to me in another post.

I ran around today buying drops from steel suppliers. Key word here is if you buy drops long enough to do your own cutting they charge you by the pound and NO Cutting fee. The crossmember cost me a whopping $11.00 and two under the cab frame rails cost me $15.00 each.

For my rear frame rails I drove down to Summit and picked up a pair of Competition Engineering 4-link frame rails. This is made from 2x3 rec tubing all .083 thick wall. Before someone pipes in and says you need 1/8" wall let me tell you you are right...if you don't tie the frame together with a roll cage. This thing is going to be tied together with a cage. While I was at Summit they had .0134 wall rollbar tubing in the clearance rack so I picked it up cheap...real cheap. They use .134 so that once bent the outside radius has a wall thickness greater than .125.

I stopped down to a friends shop and he let me tig weld today, it felt good as I haven't been TIG welding in some years (13 years) just like riding a bike....I still got the feel! As a side note this shop will be doing one of them biker build off deals. Top notch shop with a bunch of cool guys into hot rods and bikes. I worked a deal out with him so that I can "buy" shop time from him. I do the work when I can and I stay out of the way while the filming crew is in house. He has CNC equipment, welders, tubing benders saws and all the other cool stuff I could never afford. They build their own frames in house from scratch.

Fellow Club members CURATOR, HEMIRAMBLER and LITLLEMAN have been helping some too. Littleman is always good to bounce ideas off of and Curator lives so close and has a wharehouse of parts incase I ever need to mock something up. And Lets not forget HemiRambler...this dude is constantly building something from custom coupler wrenches to modified toilet flush levers.....and a Ford 9" jig to narrow rearends. While at Summit I picked up some big bearing housing ends, and an aluminum radiator that will fit inside the bed nicely.

The Motor is a 355 SBC 4 bolt main, pink rods and TRW forged low compression slugs. Heads are 1965 461's with stainless valves 2.02/1.6 style. These came from a friend. These were on a Gasser from the late 60's....a blue Willys nicknamed 'Ole Blue" driven by none other than Barb Hamilton. Well now you ask why would I ever run a set of Low compression pistons in a motor with small chambered heads.....answer is 6-71.

Now I need a name for it so I can label my posts!!!
    Curator has the REBEL REAPER,
    Dave has DEATHS DOORSTEP.

Maybe I'll call it the CURLY SHUFFLE....Knuck Knuck Knuck OOOooohhhh a wiseguy.

I could call it "C-Dif" for you medical types you know it's some nasty case of the shits but for the rest of the world I'll tell 'em it means "Curly's Different"

Curly -by chance..... you don't need one of the super hambtastic American Standard door handles do you??? These are a very rare option as Henry only used them on a select few C-cab trucks. Let me know!

  29. Only if it comes with the invisble fine pitched screws....they are worthless without the screws and I could also use a set of NOS gennie C-cab doors too if ya got 'em

  30. Looking forward to seeing the build up on this one.
I have an old 28/29 closed cab on the back burner for a future project.
