Hot Rods Vern Tardel 50 Ford F1 wedge bracket for mounting F1 steering gear in Deuce frame

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by daveydeuce, Dec 25, 2024.

  1. Anyone know of anyone having or reproducing the VT wedge for FI steering box in Deuce frame. Don't think VT makes then anymore. Thanx Davey

That is on the sold out list on his website. I'm pretty sure that he is older than I am and I am older than dirt so I can see that slowing down and primarily playing with cars rather than working on car stuff sounds pretty good. I do have a copy of his Hot rod your Model A with the instructions for modifying the box and setting things up to install the flange on the box. The flange you can make out of a piece of 3/8 plate.

Iirc, that wedge is for a ‘53-56 F100 steering box. I believe for the Tardel Bishop roadster they cut off the flange from a F1 box and rotated then re welded on it to better match the holes/orientation to better suit fitment in a Model A chassis. Their thinking was that while the F100 and the F1 box could work, F1 was an easier choice.
Realizing I didn’t answer the question here.

  8. Local guy used to rebuild an modify the F 100 box. Then put the model A tube back on them. My glass A full fender roadster drove like a dream. Pinto power an 32 trans.

Drom Vern's book Here are the pages on mounting the F 1 box. I'm sharing it because the book is no longer in print and hard to find too boot.
Without a milling machine it will take some serious hand work to make the wedge and the 3/8 plate I was thinking about earlier may be too thin to start out with. This shows cutting the flange off the F-1 box as others described. Then you have to make the new flange and mill/grind the angle into it.
The Holesaw inside of a holesaw trick I saw a while back might be a better option for enlarging the hole in the frame than a torch.
