Projects Help staring flat head

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by iwanaflattie, Dec 25, 2024.

  1. Hello,
    Happy holidays.
I was messing with the flathead in the welder yesterday again, and almost got to fire up.
After the last attempt when it almost started but when I tried again it seemed like the battery died.
I think I fried the starter solenoid.

    Problem one.
This welder is al set up with gauges, starter button, fuel primer,it has a block heater etc.
The starter button was sitting there but no wire attached to it.
How does the button work? Just grounds the wire to the relay?

    Problem 2.
When I hook the battery cables it automatically spins the starter, does the starter button(wire) have to do anything with this?

    Problem 3.
I think I fried the starter relay, could I test this by hooking the battery directly to the starter?

    Thanks in advance.

I would check the connections and grounds. The wiring may be too small a gauge or corroded.
Check all the connections and wire.
A simple clean up can do wonders.

That looks like a simple push button starter switch from like a Ford F1.
You may want to look at a wiring diagram from one of those.

    Were you cranking by hand?

  5. Sorry,I bypassed the starter solenoid, hooked the battery directly to the starter and it fired up,sadly I couldn't keep it running.
Bad fuel pump, bad primer pump and God only what other issues are hiding.only thing I can do is try.

  6. As I said before, the flathead fired up and started ,and ran for a few seconds,,then it didn't start so I took a brake from it.

I just looked at the primer pump and it's a 6v..
    Ooooops

  7. In my very limited experience, the diaphragm in the fuel pump was torn, and that was a long time ago.
