My 38 Chev runs bumper less > I'm putting it up for sale so if the front bumper is a "deal breaker" I have one with the brackets. I do run the back bumper. LOL 000_1229.JPG 000_0949.JPG

  4. I usually *don't* like Falcons without a front bumper, which shows the piece behind it that has squarish holes in it.

I think the older hot rods look good without a front bumper, but when you get into the 50's in most cases the car looks unfinished. There are exceptions, not many IMO.

  11. Looking through my photos to support HRP’s model A thread I noticed that I have saved a lot of pictures of cars without bumpers - so I thought of starting a “look ma no bumpers thread”, but did a search first and found this started by- that’s right HRP, so here is a little resurrection. 06CEFD9B-D6E5-46D4-ADC0-3B20EEB4F4BF.jpeg

The gravel panel on the '60 and '61 Falcons have 5 holes in them (2 are for bumper brackets, not sure on the other 3). I think they look really boss when people fill holes 1, 3, and 5 and leave the 2nd and 4th open. All 5 filled looks good, too. I think it works as a g***er, but also has that early TransAm racer look like the first gen chevy F bodies when sat low.

If I can ever get a straight one, or get mine straight enough, I'll be filling 1,3 and 5.

    Hello,

In my conversations with the late Don Nowell, there were a lot of commonalities in our history. We missed drag racing against each other by a mere few months and we were gone from the scene by the time he was having a great time with his immaculate 37 Chevy Coupe.

Out in the desert motorcycle racing scene, we may have p***ed each other on the dry lake portion of those 40-50 mile Hare and Hound races. Also, he had a similar Greeves Scrambler with his version of a “blooey pipe.”

The two coolest 37 Chevy Coupes racing in the Gas Coupe Cl*** were Doug Cook’s Tahitian Red/Candy Apple 37 Coupe and Don Nowell’s Blue 37 Coupe.
upload_2024-12-31_2-34-39.png It just looks as if the 37 Chevy came that way.
Normally, we like all cars in the Gas Coupe/Sedan Cl*** to have a legal front bumper. Our Willys Coupe was restricted to a front bumper and one day, when I took off the front bumper to attach a new tow bar, as we got to the tech inspection, they put us in an Altered Cl***. Why? No front bumper and it is not street legal without one. The 1960 rules were very strict. (Luckily, we lived about a mile away and I drove home to get the stock front bumper.)

But, as the cl*** progressed, rules became slack and bumpers started to disappear. As did the headers into mufflers to make it street legal. When the time of individual header pipes came on the scene, it was no longer street legal rules, but a drag racing Gas Coupe/Sedan racing cl***. And then the street cl***es disappeared…

    Note:
Three years later, our close friend, Atts Ono's finished 40 Willys Coupe arrived on the drag racing scene with his version for the B/Gas cl***.

Atts Ono worked on his custom 40 Willys Coupe to perfection. It had a bright red color and was captured many times over at Lion’s Dragstrip by numerous photographers. Yet, it looks as if it just stepped out of a hospital clean workspace… without a front bumper. By 1964, the Gas Coupe/Sedan Cl*** rules had eased off and cars raced without front bumpers, but had to have a gas tank no longer in the cab. YRMV

A custom installation behind the grille and sitting on machined mounts, without having a blob sitting outside, in front of the whole front end… Thanks, @elgringo71
