If buying a tall deck, know your specs. Recently, a would-be Hamburger proudly dragged one in. When shredded, it was 3.937" bore, a 366"; just very expensive anchor material.

Also. Did the tall deck have “high perf passenger” cast in it as well?

I am led to believe the pics I sent in are for a SHORT deck. I do see "perf passenger" but not "high". Look at the 1st pic I posted, below the cam on the driver side of the block you will see the " perf passenger" words. ...Question I do have a short deck YES?

366T and 427T tall deck blocks have "TRUCK" cast in the block. I've never seen Hi performance passenger cast in the tall deck blocks.

Sorry, added the “high” myself I guess.

But are you looking for a tall deck BBC?

The words cast into the ends of the block don't mean much, they just tell the guys making the castings, which castings use that particular mold for the end of the block. There are some molds that are used on all 3 types of blocks: pass, truck, hi perf. So you'll find blocks that say all three things, and it tells you nothing about what block it actually is.

But if you look at other features of the block, you can tell what it is. 2 bolt mains usually is PASS, short deck 4 bolt is usually HI PERF, and tall deck is usually TRUCK.

All we can tell from that picture is that it's a short deck Mark IV block. If you can take a few more pictures, or find numbers and post them, we might could tell you more, if you're interested.

look for numbers stamped on top of the block, just in front of the pass side head. Look for numbers cast on the top of the bellhousing area, behind the heads. There should be a few different sets. Also there might be some small cast numbers/letter above the oil pan rail, on the driver side, middle or rear of the engine.

Post the numbers Squirrel mentioned and we can tell you exactly, but it is for sure a standard 9.800" deck, not a tall deck.

    It’s a 78-90 454 out of a truck or motor home.

Since it's a late Mark IV block, the engine number could be stamped on the little pad just above the timing cover. I just remembered....that's where it is on my XCH, which is from 1989.

this is where the numbers are on it...

    Engine number, above timing cover

    xch1.jpg

This is the engine number. I think it means
    T - Tonawanda engine plant
    L - ?
    22 - 22nd day of the month
    XCH - suffix code
9 - last digit of year

    On the back, driver side:

    xch2.jpg

This is the block casting number

On the back, pass side, near the middle: xch3.jpg

This is the casting date. F is the 6th month, June, 16th day of the month, 9 is the last digit of the year, in this case 1989.

Look for these numbers on your block. I think this late in the Mark IV production run, the 454s were all 4 bolt main, used in the SS half ton, and 3/4 and 1 ton trucks and motorhomes, and sold over the counter. They were selling a lot of LS-6 and LS-7 engines at that time. The one I have is an LS-7.

Pull a valve cover and get a casting number too, if it's rectangular port it should have a little mark on the end on oval_port_cast_line.jpg square_port_cast_line.jpg the heads. Don't see it on yours.

Suffix code UBH is a 1983 Truck 454, 3/4 or 1 ton, 210 HP. It must have been used on something else as well, because your casting date is Jan 24, 1988 and the engine assembly date is Jan 31. Unless you misread the last digit of the date casting, and it's really 3, not 8

Finding a complete list of suffix codes for truck engines is pretty difficult...sorry
