Technical Oil pressure sender for gauge and warning light

I am not sure what to get. I need a sender that will run a gauge and a warning light. I found a few online but I am asking here before I just try my luck and buy one.

 

I've never seen one, but I've seen a 1/8" pipe TEE....

 

The gauge and the sender must have the same resistance range.

 

Put an oil pressure T piece in the block oil pressure gauge in one orifice and warning light in the other. Something like this from Amazon.

Brading is right put a T in the block and you can run both. Resistance has nothing to do with it.

 

A T will work fine, I have done it several times over the years.

 

A sender for a gauge is going to be bigger, so it can provide a sweep of resistance. The light is a simpler on/off switch and smaller. A tee is the normal answer. You could get some fancy electronic gauge that has logic inside and when the pressure signal drops below a set point, it triggers a light. I don't know of this style being available. This typical kit with gauges and lights uses separate senders.

I'm curious as to why anyone would want both ?

 

The advantage to having both a gauge and a light is for redundancy
so as suggested use a tee for two separate systems

 

Because a short amount of time not watching the gauge can be catastrophic. The light provides a warning to pay attention. Like a shift light for a tach.

 

Depending on the engine, a lot of times there is another point in the oil galley where an additional sender can be used.

 

On dirt track cars we used both /with a tee. And we put a brake light in the car so Micky could see it from the infield and eat you XXX alive if you kept running/or ignoring the op gauge. It wasn’t me but we had a driver that was just like Days of Thunder. He could drive but he wasn’t all that good mechanically.
Mick later wired in a kill switch that if it dropped below certain level it would literally kill the car. ( remembering we were using a accel dual point and coil ). I don’t remember exacts but it wasn’t that complicated.

 

I guess one of these would enter into the equation?

 

I have mine set up that way. My gauges are aftermarket and are under the dash, but I like to have my stock dash operate like it is supposed to.

 

As recommended by the Department Of Redundancy Department.

 

Why not? A bright red light will get your attention way before you notice the gauge heading to zero psi. I like both.

The red light serves as a great reminder to shut the ignition off as you are coasting to a stop with a brand new hole in the block.

 

How about a Murphy gauge; set the pointer to switch on the light at the pressure you prefer; maybe keep the alarm too for an audio warning.

 

I have thought about Murphy Gauges, many industrial engines and equipment run Murphys. They can be wired to shut engine off or turn on a light, also can wire to not allow engine to fire until pressure is reached, they’re reasonably priced and very durable.
They make temperature gauges also.

Here is how I hooked up an idiot light

 

I'd put the TEE on the engine, so when the sender starts leaking it won't be inside the car.

 

That is how we did my Dad's 57 chevy. He wanted the original oil pressure light in the dash to still work, but also have a mechanical oil pressure gauge for peace of mind.

 

I did a google search for oil pressure gauge with warning light, many return hits on the search.

 

I placed mine under the dash to reduce clutter in the engine bay.

 

Must be a whole bunch of inattentive operators out there ... Plus , likes been said , buy the time the light comes on , the damage has been done .

I lost my first cars engine to a bad gauge and no warning light. Drain plug fell out! I was scooting down the expressway and the engine started losing power. Gas gauge was close to empty and I thought I was running out of gas. Oil gauge showed 40 and temp was in normal. Engine locked up and gauge still showed 40 with the key on. I got the car like that. The previous owner installed some sport gauges and the warning light was not hooked up. That car always had 40 pounds of oil pressure.

 

I don’t think inattentive drivers, but a light catches your eye if you’re not scanning the gauges.

 

I think the idiot light will flutter under low pressure or low volume

 

Ford has done this for a while. They had complaints about the pressure dropping after the engine warmed up which is normal. Rather than educate, they fixed the customer. They used the switch (not sender) to tell the gauge to go to half way. Sounds like yours got stuck too.
