Great thread, I have a button flange 57 312 in my 56 F100 script bed. Looking forward to knocking some of the ugly off of her.

Where is this “ugly” you speak of? Looks fine to me. Just needs a 4bbl and lose the crossover exhaust pipe.

  3. Hi everybody, I posted in the past about our 32 Ford y-block powered roadster we built then sold with the profits going to local charity. We are well on into our next build, a 27T track roadster powered by a 272 Y and a C4 trans. Thought I would post a couple pictures from last night, we get together on Thursday nights and work on the project car. 2 if they started with a 1955-6 “A” small base 4 barrel manifold and 1 if they started with a 1957 “B” manifold..For some reason Edelbrock made a small base aluminum intake in 1954-5.

Therm are 2 current manufacturers making single 4 barrels.
Personally I think the adapters fit 3-2’s on a 4 barrel manifold I’d a little goofy but many use and like them.

There were at least 5 manufacturers of y-block 3-2 manifolds back when they were new and popular; there are always a few listed for sale.

  8. Too many! I would have been happy with a single 4 barrel but the group wanted three 94's for the look. This is the same setup we used on the 32 and it ran just fine! It is the stock 272 1955 teapot manifold with two adapters.

  9. Just what I thought... two adapters too many for my taste. ;)

    great post and fantastic info!!

I was gifted a VERY clean 292 for my '57 F100 short wide I am repainting and detailing. Hopefully being running soon. Engine will be painted yellow, with white Mercury valve covers and a rare 1965 F series oil bath air cleaner. 13. Dreaming here but I’d love to put one of these on my Y-block. 1956 Fairlane Townsedan, original 292 with just under 31K miles. I’ve had the valve covers and valley pan off and it was clean as a whistle.

It’s not that tough. Had this originally on my stock 55 292 with just a 57 intake, Edelbrock, and a distributor upgrade.

Ended up building a new engine for Winslow. 312 block had cracked main webs, so sourced a 292 block, ground my 312 crank down. Put a set of G heads on it. I have just done cam break in and have about 20 miles on it. still working out a few bugs but so far so good.

  18. Posted here before about our group doing the builds then donating funds locally after the car is built. The last car was a 32 ford roadster 292 Y block powered, and I posted pictures here. That car sold and we went on to a 27 track T build powered by a 272 Y block I have also posted pictures of here so this is an update to that current build. Car is getting close to being done, it is painted and awaiting interior and fuel tank along with a windshield. Here are a couple photos from last nights work group. We were a bit light on help due to the holidays. Mark 471676223_9139655802758183_3132401454780180303_n.jpg 471321959_9139655999424830_4077267757416752792_n.jpg

Been following this thread for awhile and never commented I built my 292 in 1999 started with a running engine that was in a ranchero it had the G heads. Ball honed the cylinders found I good standard crank and did a bench polish, ported and polish the heads, installed 352 valve springs 429 retainers and keepers,Isky E3 cam,352 push rods, melling high flow oil pump, unilite distributer, holley 650 20221102_213032.jpg 20241020_145729.jpg double pumper and some oiling and cooling mods. The thing runs between 180 and 195 degrees had it up to 7 grand no problem with the Mummert aluminum flywheel.

That´s a nice truck and a cool Y-Block. I´ve been told that those glass type fuel filter tend to vibrate loose and have a reputation for starting more fires than ex-wifes... just saying,it happened to me and I replaced all of mine, I was lucky and the fuel din´t catch fire...the engine just simply died but fuel was everywhere... would be a shame to see your truck getting hurt.

I recently acquired this Cut-away engine display. I am not very familiar with this Ford Engines. I was told this is a 312 motor , can you guys confirm this? IMG_4784.jpeg IMG_4787.jpeg

  22. It is a Y Block. Measure the stroke to determine what displacement it is. 239, 272, 292, 312 Ford to 368 Lincoln. 1953 to 1964.

Does not have 312 heads, they are 54, 55 heads. 312 didn't come out till 56.
See if you can measure the bore? Rod length, and main journal size, are the two main ways to check.

OR, check the # on the one remaining main cap.
What does it matter which CU it is, it is gonna be low on compression, I guarantee? haha.
    Cool to look at.
There was at one time offered to me a full c 292, cutaway y-block. It was from a university I believe.

Now you need a cutaway transmission to not bolt to it. :D

Thanks Guys , Turns out to be a 1955 272. Now I know what I got!

  28. Which just confirms that they're all 312's when up for sale... ;)

I knew we were in for some cold weather, so it was a good time to get out to the garage and install the rocker arm sets I built A WHOLE DAMN YEAR AGO!
I ordered new rocker shafts from John Mummert with an allen screw kit for pressurizing the oiling system way back then, cleaned up the high ratio 1:54s I already had a slew of, and assembled. I had the lower ratio on there from the original build and have never got around to upgrading them. Everything else I wanted to do to this engine had been done some years ago.

It's a 292 block with 312 crank. Isky cam, Blue Thunder Intake, Edelbrock 600, and some other stuff. Mummert ported the heads (probably some of the last iron heads they did).ARP studs in the mains and heads. New valves & seats and Isky spring kit. Headers into 2” exhaust. Runs well and did 310 on the engine dyno.

Would the change make much of a difference, worth the effort?

I took off the old set, and right off the bat, I found that the #1 exhaust rocker was scored on the shaft and hanging up. So, glad that will be fixed at least.

I pulled the plug on that cylinder - it was grungy but cleaned up just fine.

Installed the new rocker setups and ran all the valves.
I was pleasantly surprised! She breathes a little easier and it did perk things up. Filled in some low-end gaps I think.
An easy winter project, done. It should run a lot better on the high end too. I'll try it out when it gets light and the weather clears.

A very good friend of mine bought a pallet of miscellaneous Y-block parts just to get the blower. He called me up as he knows I like Y-blocks and offered to give me the rest of what was on the pallet. The story was that the motor was in a 57 T-Bird that they were drag racing quite some time ago. It broke the #2 rod, and it went thru the side of the block. I don't know what happened to the T-Bird from there on, but all the rest of the parts ended up on a pallet where they stayed for years.
    Inventory after teardown includes:
    312 crank
    Pair of G heads complete
    Pair of Tomas M8 rockers
Weber alum flywheel and clutch cover plate
    3 speed overdrive transmission
T-Bird front cover, water-pump core, bell housing with throw-out arm and cover, blower crankshaft pulley
    Judson coil
    1 set headers

I think I did pretty good on the deal.
