Jim you can also purchase a used windows 10 or 11 tablet on eBay for under $100 download the Terminator X software and use it to program or run a full gauge cluster that you customize. I got this 9 inch on EBay for $60.00
It’s easier to see than the 3-1/2 inch screen, and far cheaper than buying their 10 inch digital dash and smaller than a laptop. You can see the small gauge cluster icon at the top right, tap it after your program is downloaded and customize your own gauge cluster.
I also bought a mount so I could use it in the truck or take it out at any time. With a "Y"
    cable you can run both.

This is the video that I learned about the tablet set up. He also lists the cables needed to connect everything.

My biggest problem with LS engines are twofold. 1) They are ugly in an old car. They are still ugly when you cover them up with all sorts of covers and shields. It just don't look right. 2) They are now belly ****on engines. Everybody's got one. If you want your newly built old car to stand out, don't put an LS in it.

If I ever replace the SBC 350 in my square body pickup, I may use an LS but I am never going to put one in my old cars. YMMV.

I was looking into the 4-5-6 cylinder Atlas series engines...they're neat, but have some problems.

If they are anywhere close to a 2JZ, they certainly are worth a closer look. Don’t know what the Atlas series engines are going for, but probably quite reasonable. Did some of the Checkers come with 6’s or were they all SBC’s?
The White Goose Bar Bonneville roadster sure hauls *** with the 2JZ!

Not that ugly... my parts chaser very mild motor..5.3.. 11s in the quarter try that with your old school factory 289 302 351w .again very mild motor and simple too as I run carb. I'll take the performance over the arguments of not using a ls you are pushing.. notice no covers etc. Take care

An early 289 with the right dress up parts has some cl*** to it. Something an ls can never achieve. I see you have a 289 sticker on the air cleaner, musta fooled a lot of Ford guys with that clever move.

Lol you know it funny the vast vast majority of people including ford guys don't pick up on. I have sat and listened to a ton of old guys tell the younger one with them " yep had one just like it back in the day. 289 best engine ever." I have posted it in numerous ford in a ford only forums and only one guy has pointed it out. The rest all thumbs up and positive comments. Not as many experts out their as one thinks there are. That said throw a factory small block ford in your favorite ride and run 11s . Good luck. This is a mild motor with factory heads etc.... they make power. They make way more power with factory heads crank rods etc when you pour the boost to them. ( mine is not boosted) try that with any factory gm or ford old school motors. You be picking up parts. Some like performance and looks. Others like looks. Its a free country. Have fun. Cheers

Entertaining thread. @ekimneirbo 's signature line about sums up this thread for me:
It takes considerable knowledge to realize the extent of your own ignorance.

A lot of newer LS engines that have the feature where they drop cylinders on the freeway when there's not much load have had lifter failures. And since the LS design is stupid you have to pull the heads to change lifters! I've got three friends with new Chevy trucks less than a year old that had to have lifters replaced under warranty! One of them said the mechanic who did the work took him aside and told him if he bought an aftermarket chip that plugs into the OBD port it eliminates the dropping cylinders and he'd never lose lifters again.
I contemplated doing a LS swap in my old 1969 Suburban whenever my 350 dies, but I think I'll probably just rebuild the 350 as it's cheaper and I'm too old to learn the LS install.
